I'm French so forgive me for my approximate English.

Hello, I came across your video by chance, CD4516, it's an excellent video.

I also have a small YouTube channel on electronics.

you saved my life with this, thank you so much, never thought about just switching between ground and vcc and use that as my clock turns out I had a bad set of dip switches, good job and thanks again!

One question though if you didn’t connect the up down pin into gnd or 5v will it count down as well?

The problem with presetable counters is that you can load in a preset, BUT that's where it starts counting. The only way I have seen to do a counter that will count up to a certain number and recycle is by adding chips to the output and then enabling the reset or clear pin when the output binary number reaches the desired highest number. In order to get a one chip presettable counter I had to use a microcontroller to count up to X and recycle

The power is internally linked with the up counter wire, that is why it runs without the VDD connected. The chip can actually run at up to 20 volts. What I do not understand is why the leds do not get burnt out without any resistor. The output current must be limited. Do you know how much current flows trough the LED?

Why is it with these videos, the basic explanation is almost never accompanied by an actual, you know, schematic that we can use to reproduce the results?
