I dont think they never learn about the unforgivable curses at Hogwarts. Even Moody/Crouch Jr says that they would normally only learn about them in 6th year. We even see that a lot of the assignments Snape gives them for DADA in Half Blood Prince are about the Imperius Curse, fighting dementors, etc so its reasonable to assume they eventually learn a lot of those skills them.

As for fighting dementors Lupin didn't teach it to them because the patronus charm is considered stupidly hard to do even for overage wizards who've graduated from Hogwarts. That's why everyone is so amazed Harry is able to do it (he even gets a bonus point for it in his DADA O.W.L, suggesting its far beyond even that level). Asking 3rd years to produce a patronus in an exam would be akin to asking a second grader to derive the Navier-Stokes equation from scratch.

Thats why I always vote Moody/Crouch Jr as Harry's best teacher even though I love Lupin! He actually taught them more of the stuff Harry then taught in the DA than Lupin, Patronus' were the only one Lupin taught that he teaches during the DA!

Yeah, I always thought it's weird how he helps the students; and genuinely seems to want to. I wonder if it has to with how he seems insane- maybe Voldemort was controlling him or something, and this was him fighting against it.

We don't know that Lupin wasn't teaching curses to the older students, since there's probably some sort of rough syllabus to follow (for the ones that care about teaching anyway), and I imagine the professors don't teach the same thing to every grade level.

When one of the bad guys is a more competent teacher than the good guys😂

In my belief, Lupin didn’t enjoy teaching his students on How to Cast Patronus Charm and it’s because he doesn’t want to show his patrons form.

I mean, instead of defence against the dark arts, it is the dark arts-

How Can Horcruxes Be Destroyed?
The killing curse — “Avada Kedavra.”
Fiendfyre — a curse that creates powerful and magical flames.
Godric Gryffindor's sword — one that was pulled from the Sorting Hat.
Basilisk's venom — acquired from a tooth of the giant Basilisk snake in the bowels of Hogwarts.

How to kill Harry Potter before Voldemore Kill him?
So as Harry Porter is a Horcrux, he basically cannot be killed by some other method that has less destructive power than the above mention things, and as he is protected by his mother's protective magic and resistance to the three unforgivable curses only Fiendfyre,
Godric Gryffindor's sword and Basilisk's venom
Can kill him before Voldemort killed him.

I feel that instead of just 7 years, Hogwarts Education ideally should last 10 years. Students get sorted on their 11th /12th Birthday and Graduate when they are 21 or 22. They should also have two sortings, first sorting in their first year & the second one in their fifth year. OWL wizarding level - 01st to 5th year and NEWT Wizarding level - 6th to 10th year. 7th to 10th year Students can do Internships with the Ministry or St Mungo's or even Gringotts. Muggle subjects such as English, Maths etc should be compulsory along with the Subject of Muggle Studies.

We only know, what Remus taught the 3rd year students. Maybe with older students he went also to curses?

Its a pity that Barty Crouch Sr or Kingsley Shacklebolt or Rufus Scrimgeour never taught DADA at Hogwarts.

I guess one could make the argument that somewhere in the background Lupin and Dumbledore had a heated debate on teaching the students the patronus charm. But Dumbledore would have said that would be tantamount to admitting that the students were under imminent threat of demo for attack and that the distance of the dementors from the school was specifically to prevent that. Which more or less turned in Dumbledore’s favor, but the narrator does make a good point.

Never did understand why barty was so insistent on teaching them those things as it gives them an edge

Crouch Jr was half baked and as loony as bella. I think he got a giggle out of scaring and grossing out as many students as possible. It wouldnt be out of character for gruff old moody to do that either. Jr may have also underestimated how well a bunch of kids would use these defenses under pressure in an actual war. He probably felt theyd just run away and not fight.

True. But let's not forget it's the school system's fault first : Hogwarts does not allow classes abt unforgivable curses. i guess Lupin was so unpopular and afraid of ppl finding out abt his identity that he didn't want more trouble, unlike Moody/Crouch who was boldly against the rules

He was doing what Snape did as a double agent.

I wish the director had used CGI for nobody’s eye rather than that strap-on absurdity.

Sadly, the books were so imaginative and the films, bar 1, never were.
