Lets Talk About Those Nintendo Switch Nvidia Leaks (ft. MVG)

This past week Nvidia had a lot of information leak online with some documents pointing towards what appears to be development of a more powerful Nintendo system. Today I wanted to talk with a Switch developer and get their take on it.

Without full backwards compatibility, an upgraded Switch would be a hard sell.

What we need is simple. Powerful enough to run more stable 60fps on the go.

I think SpawnWave is the best gaming news channel around. Concise, interesting, and relatively unique perspectives on everything gaming, all very on cue*.

I think it has to be back wards compatable. other wise its just going to be hard to sell as a revision. If its not backwards compat then its def a next gen switch instead of a revision.

Love these discussion style videos with other guests!

I loved this video, you are inviting a friend to your channel to really talk about something, like you do with the Spawncast ofcourse, but just talk to one person like this and really digging into one specific subject is really entertaining!

If the next Nintendo console is not backwards compatible then I will be absolutely pissed. I'm hoping that the games we have now will just run and look better

Ah, two of my favorites! Spawn Wave and MVG

I don't think a non-generational upgrade without full backwards compatibility would ever happen. A mid-gen deluxe revision that doesn't even play all the games of the generation is a hard sell, even for the more hardcore gamers.

Always wondered what the "update dock" option is within the menus. If these QOL updates are available to everyone, would be sweet to see. Whether 1080p or 4K. Plus audio multi support.

A boost definitely is in the cards.

I have no idea what you're talking about technology wise but I'm definitely going to pick up RCG Zero. Nice work, mate. :)

Great video. Best outlook, thoughts, & guesses on what is to come for the future of the Switch family. Made my Sunday better.

If we’re staying with the oled 720p screen in hand held mode and saving the 4k DLSS for the docked mode ……would it be safe to assume in hand held mode we can see the switch push more FPS ( like just a default performance mode ) and give docked mode the option of quality or performance mode

The 2048 CUDA cores Ampere type architecture (my guess is Lovelace variant) found in the leaked data would be great! If they put active / though console cooling to dock, it should allow ~20-25W SoC TDP. With N5 / N5P that would give way over 2 TFLOPS. Even 15W SoC TDP would get close to that 2 TFLOPS.

It would be exciting to finally see a switch with extra power, however I’d be highly disappointed if they removed BC. The switch library is massive and I’ve spent a fortune building my own library. Fingers crossed we can bring them over.

I will say that NVN2 Driver was inside the leak and did give out the GPU config for the SoC (along it's name, Drake)

The GPU is a 12SM GPU with the uArch based on Orin (confirmed via T234/GA10B, which is Orin, sharing the same Cache with T239/GA10F, which is Drake)

So
1536 CUDA Cores
12RT cores
48 Tensor Cores
2.3MB L1 Cache (As Orin upped it to 192kb per SM)
4MB of L2 Cache (as orin doubled the L2 per GPC to 4MB)

That sort of GPU when clocked at 1Ghz even would match up to the PS4 Pro's GPU in raster and that's before DLSS.
Not to mention how 12 Ampere RT cores would likely beat the PS5 in raw RT Acceleration, doubly so when paired with DLSS.

(EDIT: The reason why here is because of the Cache mainly, as Ampere is a memory-starved uArch versus Turing, so that extra low-level cache will speed things up heavily and hopefully bring the per-CUDA core performance back more in line with Turing, thus allowing 12SM Drake to potentially compete against 16SM Ampere (Laptop 3050) at the same clocks)

After hearing John say it loud, I can see Nintendo naming it Switch 4k...

Especially since they just named the last one "Switch OLED, " on top of their insistence on "New" prefixes, they like going the basic & literal route.

This was actually one of the most useful videos of all time! Hearing real information instead of just rumors. MVG was great- and so was Spawnwave as usual. Can't get better than this one!

I hope it's a significant jump in power. I really want lots of hi-def textures. Tired of everything looking flat

I love how the Spawn wave 👋 video is always ready to watch when I’m making my coffee
