The year was 1846, when in George Ruxton's own words, he "...left Chihuahua, bound for the capital of New Mexico." During his adventures, recorded in his book "Wild Life in the Rocky Mountains," Ruxton met many people. One group of people included trappers of the mountains. In this selection, he summarizes the mountain man camps he had seen.

As with all historical sources, it's important to note that Ruxton didn't see everything, and he is only describing what he witnessed. This source does not describe every mountain man camp ever made but does summarize the scenes witnessed by one individual.
