I’d add these things: NEVER leave a mess at home! No matter how hectic packing and getting out the door is, leave the house spotless so it’s welcoming to come back to.

If you are returning to work the next day, prepare clothes (iron them, set them out) so you don’t have to do that.

If possible, take the dirty laundry to a wash and fold service. It’s not that expensive and will make returning to real life SO much easier.

Plan TWO dinners and freeze them. One for the evening you get home and one for the next day. Also, order groceries for pick up or delivery upon your return.

The bonus tip is something I always follow when I take a vacay. I always, always take an extra day after coming home to reset.

Our trick is to never, never, never ever put anything on a credit card while there. We always take Disney gift cards for any expenses. Nothing beats coming home to no credit card bill😊

I am retired now, but when I worked, I took the day before and the day after vacation off.
It made such a big difference.
We always have vacations paid for and our spending money saved up before going on vacation.

Completely agree with taking the extra day! As a person for works M-F coming back on a Saturday makes all the difference. Not only can I get settled at my house but often times I’ll allow myself a couple of hours to go through work emails to make the first day back in the office more manageable.

I always need a reset day! It kills that vacation buzz if you don’t! Also I make a point to clean my house before I leave for a trip so I come home to a clean peaceful place!

Jen, you are very wise. Your home is your home was an absolute revelation. Thanks for the reminder.

I get up a little extra early and change the sheets and put fresh towels in the bathroom BEFORE we leave for vacation. Come home to clean sheets and towels. Extra day also.

Many many moons ago I used to regularly red eye into NYC and go right into the office. Now we’re fully in the come home early camp for just the reasons you state

I love EVERYTHING about this… I’m one of those who says “oh it’s harmless to check work email once or twice on vacay” but then just like you said, it puts you right back into work mode and can steal the joy of the relaxation and recharging we need. We’re taking a vacation in august and I’m going to challenge myself to leave work at work and really enjoy time with my family. Thanks for the encouragement to do so!

Yep. Prepay AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Pre buy $£€ whatever is required. Preload visa travel cards.
Prepurchase cruise excursions, pre load cruise $.

Wash DAILY ( in the shower ). You come home with clean clothes.

Leave the house clean
Have food in the freezer for when you get home
Triple check and confirm everything before leaving
Good point about your home. Never thought of that before 👍
Reset. Good point. I made that mistake once. I fainted at work after a month away and a 24 hr flight home. I learnt my lesson. Also do stopovers ( 2/3 day minimums- it helps )

Great points. I would only add that you might want to have a little more saved for unplanned events. We got stuck in Florida this past weekend with canceled flights at the end of our trip and no where to go. It was spring break and all things were booked. We needed to spend an additional 2, 000 dollars that we did not plan for. So from here on I will be building in a emergency vacation fund just in case.

For years I was always the person who was taking texts and checking email on vacation. My greatest joy was when we would go somewhere with awful cell service or WiFi and I was forced to not be available and then I learned that no matter if I have service I can still choose to be unavailable!!!

Yes, yes, yes. And the extra day is golden. We all need a vacation from our vacations so that extra day to chill is imperative

I agree with Abby Stone. I always clean my house B4 vacation so when I get back, I only have to do laundry of the trip after I unoack. Living at a vacation destination like Florida, when I travel in state it's usually by car so I'm not as tired as I would be if I travel by air.

Pro tip- schedule your house cleaner to clean just before you get home. It makes it so nice to come home to!
