I'm a big fan of bunnspecial. He's an entertaining personality as well. I love his constant complaining and whining and the fact that he doesn't feel the need to make dumb jokes all the time that are NOT FUNNY. It also cracks me up that rather than using a small hammer when he uses his staking tool he whacks it with a piece of wood.
He's priceless. He's also a sort of 'close enough' watchmaker. I don't recall him doing videos on regulating his completed work. He seems to be satisfied just to get the watches working, running.

Good video, and you were properly cautious as you went in. I have a few of those K&D staff removers that I have used mostly with success. One tip is to, as the instructions from K&D say, hit the punch "smartly". It seems to me that I may have enlarged the hole in a balance or two before got "smarter" with the tap. So, yes, give it a good, unafraid tap.

Oh, and the fingernail disclaimer is a crack-up to me, as I too have long nails on my picking hand. And quite a bit longer than yours. My girlfriend hates them. I'm constantly telling people the reason why, even if they don't ask. WE know what they're thinking. :-) Good luck on your watch work and videos. Cheers.

Hi, so just for clarification, do you have to lathe off the rivet before using this tool? If you don't have a lathe (and it is a riveted staff as I think most vintage American pocket watch staffs are), what are the options for safely removing the old staff from the balance wheel?

I was wondering what type of camera/software were you using? I noticed you zoomed in with your mouse?
Thanks

You will be far more impressed with a Platax tool if you can find one. These are designed to remove the staff without damaging the balance which, I suppose, is the objective of your tool. With the Platax tool it is much easier to use plus it can be used to remove the roller.
To find one complete without damage to the plate and punches may prove difficult and certainly expensive yet a very useful item to own.
Thanks for your excellent presentation.

Had to watch this and Bunn's again. Just for good measure cuz it's been awhile. Yeah these things are hard to find, and prices on the 'Bay have gone up considerably since I got mine. Is Uncle Larry even in business anymore? Btw thanks JD
