The first Thief games were bashed for that very reason, not everyone appreciated how weak the player was.

While for some players, that was what drew them in.

Some of the climbing & action scenes look like cgi, but all the closeups on Garrett look like a real actor lighted & touched up to look like cgi. They can make real people look like a fancy cutscene.
