What You Need To Know Before Receiving Your Shipping Container Delivery

If you have recently purchased or rented a shipping container, it is important to watch this video to familiarize yourself with the process.

This video will cover what we need to know from you, what you need to do prior to your sea can delivery, and how it works when we get there.

The Container Guy has two different systems for delivering shipping containers. We have deck trucks and trucks with tilt trailers. Make sure you understand what kind of truck is coming to you for your delivery so you have enough room on your site.

For a 20’ shipping container delivery to run smoothly, you will need at least 65’ of straight-line clearance for the truck to drop the container on site.

For a 40’ container delivery, you need at minimum 110’ of room for the truck to drop the sea can in place.

Foundation is extremely important when it comes to hosting a shipping container. You will need a level ground so the frame of the container doors don’t twist and cause future problems.

We also highly recommend placing 6” treated wood blocks beneath the four corners of the container so it sits above the ground. If the container sits too close to the ground, moisture can eventually seep through the floor and cause condensation and floor rot.

Looks like that container was set directly on the gravel without the blocks at the four corners you mentioned in the video ?

That helps me visualize the delivery process but my 20ft containers will need to be dropped on stacks of cement cap blocks that are spaced appropriately. The land slopes both downward and to the back. So I created stacks of blocks of different heights so that the tops of the block stacks are level with each other, but then I have several delivery issues to contend with:

1. The front stacks have to be moved aside so the truck can back up over their locations and drop the back corners of the containers onto my rear block stacks.
2. Since the truck will be flat on the uneven ground but the block stacks are leveled to each other, one of the rear container legs will rest on a stack while the adjacent leg will still be several inches above its assigned stack.
3. As the truck pulls forward and the container gradually slides off, eventually the container will tilt onto the second rear block stack and one of the front legs will lift off of the truck bed.
4. When the container is almost at the end of the tilt bed, I will need to put the two front block stacks back into their assigned locations. Then the truck will need to drop the front end of the container onto the front block stacks. Again, the two front block stacks are level with each other, but the ground between them isn't. So, one container leg will contact its stack before the other one.

I'm thinking that I'll need to attach some cables to the rear of the shipping container to keep it from moving off of the rear block stacks as the truck moves forward, as for awhile only one rear leg will actually be on its block stack and I'm worried that there won't be enough surface friction to keep the container in place as the truck moves forward. (If it slides forward even a few inches it would either fall off the stack or topple the stack and land on the ground. In either case I would have a failed delivery placement and I have nothing that would allow me to recover from that.)

Anybody have experience with delivering a 20ft container on uneven ground onto leveled stacks of concrete cap blocks? (Note: the block stacks are glued & cemented together to make piers that are resting on small leveled beds of compacted gravel.)

Do you recommend preparing the ground in some way for container delivery? In my case, the spot is currently just grass, and the west side is about 6 inches lower than the east where the container might go. I'll like the container to be closer to level than that.

Have you considered checking out the M1022A1 Mobilizer.
The US Military uses these units, there is a European country up northwest that designed these for quick and efficient movement around dock yards. I believe they have licensed a US company to build these as well for the military. There are several YouTube videos on this system. Just search M1022 mobilizer.
