I like both, but Elite has some other features that even the manuals do not mention: Once you have set up the Elite, you then have another option called Vacation Mode that will show up in the display options. This lessens the amount of light so the plants are not sucking up water as much. It is only available once you have fully set up the program.
Another option not discussed in manuals is being able to adjust the "days since planted" and the "days until you add nutrients" which is handy if you added in a new plant with the old plants, and want to keep track of the days since the new plant has been planted, and if you added in nutrients a day or so early, you can then change through the display options, the days until you add new nutrients so it keeps track of this accurately to the day.
I like the non-smear fingerprint of the black model, but the sleekness of the silver. The digital features are what drew us to the elite, seeing how many days things have been planted, actually seeing the number of days left until you add nutrients, being able to choose the type of plant you are growing so the length of the light time adjusts, and as you mentioned being able to adjust the height of the light to any height is a bonus. A huge bonus is being able to change when you want the lights to turn on at any time of the day is available thru the display in the elite, but the non-elite you have to press and hold the light button at the precise time you want your lights to come on (not good if you want it to turn on at 4:00 am in the morning LOL).
One downfall of all of the Aerogarden Elites is when the power goes out the clock will need to be reset. The Elite WILL keep your other settings as days since planted, days until add nutrients, but for some odd reason it does not keep the clock setting. So you would need to change the time on the display of the clock, otherwise do not change anything else. I always make a note of the other information before changing the diplay, just in case I by accident select "Start a New Garden" which will take everything back to ZERO. When I did that though, you can go thru the display and manually enter back in "Days since planted" and "Days until nutrients need to be added in"...this is not mentioned in the manuals either.

I got the elite just for the stainless steel look. It's currently growing herbs on my kitchen counter. A lot of my appliances are stainless steel so I feel like this makes it look like it belongs in my kitchen.
And I got a decent discount on it because it was a Black Friday sale.

You can also test the pump on the harvest basic by pressing the leaf button once

I like the day timer on the Elite but I just discovered there are phone apps that can count up or down days too. You can use an app for all your gardens at once! The Harvest XL has a considerably taller light, which makes it better than the Elite for me.

I got the Elite version thinking the inside would also be steainless steel but it looks like the inside is still the same. Wish I would had seen this video sooner

The harvest has a test pump mode. Just touch the water button briefly and the pump will run for a few minutes.
