To be fair, keep ketchup in his jacket, and ketchup bags in his mouth to mimic the symbol of blood and make the player feels bad after a genocide run would be a very Sans thing to do.

The thing that intrigues me the most is that both of the skelebros physically persist in some way after their HP hits 0. Papyrus' head remains for a bit before dying and disappearing, while sans is able to sit and talk for a bit afterwards. The only other characters who are able to do this are Boss Monsters and undyne (and MTT i guess but they're a robot that explodes, they don't turn to dust). Boss monsters' souls linger for a short time after death, whereas sans and papyrus' do not. Undyne, when they persist after death, persist the longest out of anyone, but they also begin melting before death, suggesting that the reasoning that Undyne can survive for a bit longer is different to why Sans and Papyrus can survive for a bit after their HP is 0. As for why they do, that's a complete mystery. If they're connected to gaster, maybe it's through him, or maybe they're just part boss monster or something. If you find any potential evidence as to how they might survive, maybe we can continue this discussion in the replies.
