Deontology

What makes something right or wrong?

One answer comes from the work of German philosopher Immanuel Kant, who is considered the founder of an ethical theory called deontology.

Deontology comes from the Greek word deon, meaning duty. It holds, quite simply, that actions are good or bad based on whether they fulfil universal moral duties.

The most user-friendly explanation of ethics theory! I love these short educational videos, the real-life examples make ethics so much more than just theory.

In the first example, the promise to partner with the associate was made with less than full knowledge of that person's character. Withdrawing from the promise may be wise. And there are other cases where unforeseen circumstances necessitate a change. If one promises to join a friend for dinner, but later in the day her child becomes ill, the first obligation is to the child.

I disagree with your analogy about the shady businessman. Correct me if I'm off track but I believe you would not have to do business with him. You're not making a personal exception. You wouldn't expect anyone to do business with that man after finding out he is going to scam. And can make deals that you later break as long as you aren't doing that willingly/purposely and as long as you would be okay with everyone being able to back out of similar deals. If he knew the guy was shady and made a deal that he knew he was going to back out of then it would be wrong. Or if he made a deal and that he regrets and wants to backout for purely selfish reasons that would not be okay because I assume most people would not be okay with everyone else backing out of deals for selfish reasons.

I think way to many use this idea by applying it to a specific circumstance where an action is not permitted, taking a VERY broad rule from that, then reapplying it to a different specific scenario where it doesn't apply anymore.
It's like asking if you should be able to drive home after drinking while out for dinner. If I have two beers and drive home you cant say "That means drinking and driving is okay for everyone." It means that everyone in that situation can drive home. But theres about 100 pre-reqisits to that statement that aren't worth typing out (How many beers, age, height, weight, metabolism, emotional state being fit for driving, driving ability, location, etc)
