Why MacBooks Don't Have A Touchscreen

Many people have grown accustom to using touchscreens thanks to the popularity of Apple's iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. But the MacBook still doesn’t have it. Despite many PC notebooks adding the feature in recent years. So why doesn’t Apple, the pioneer of multi-touch, add the technology to MacBook?

Answer: Because iPads already exist and you can even get Smart/Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil support.

I think the reason why Apple hasn’t introduced the touchscreen on a mac is because it would hurt their iPad sales. Especially if it got stylus support. That would mean the only advantage an iPad would have is gaming, but no one would get an iPad for art because a MacBook with a touchscreen and stylus support would be a really good art device.

They feared that it would diminish the sale of iPads. Practically, throwing a touchscreen on the Mac would make iPads look like note-taking/drawing devices. That would converge the customer base. 🤷🏻‍♂️

At first, I thought a touchscreen on a laptop was unnecessary until I actually tried it and now I honestly can't go back, it makes the experience so much smoother, efficient and convenient for me personally. There isn't a need to differentiate between tasks that require a touchscreen and those that require the trackpad as in my use 99% of the time they are interchangable. I also can't speak for everyone, but everyone I know who uses a laptop with a touchscreen prefers using the touchscreen over a trackpad, and those who don't prefer the touchscreen are using a mouse, I barely know anyone who uses the trackpad on it's own, on either PC or Mac.

Adding a touch screen to a Mac would also result as a huge downfall in iPad sales too, right?

Btw I love ur videos Greg!
Keep doing what you’re doing!!

Edit: OH WOW! I’ve never gotten this many likes!! 😂

I'm probably one of the few, but I feel like touch screen is not needed for the MacBook is that:
— Your not holding the Macbook like the Ipad or Iphone.
— The Macbook isn't meant to be close at eye's length, it's meant to be at arm's length.

I always thought touchscreens on laptops were merely a gimmick. I find it more cumbersome to tap a screen on a computer than using a keyboard and a mouse. My personal experience with these touch laptops are why I agree with Craig's reason why Apple refuses to add touchscreens to their computers.

This excuse is such a B.S
First of all the customers are intelligent enough to decide and understand for themselves to use a touch screen or not or to decide that their device have it or no .
This choice should be given to the costumers .
Second : Aren't MacBook devices expensive enough ?
How much of a difference that gonna make ?

The real thing is people at apple only want costumers to buy and buy and buy and lock them in the ecosystem .
And the reason for MacBooks don't have a touch screen is only iPad, MacBooks already support some IOS apps and the difference between them will be almost non so less sales for iPad and that's not good for them so :
We will never see a MacBook with a touch screen
And also we will never see an iPad running Mac os .
These are facts at least for a couple of years .

I came from a two in 1 laptop and I can agree that I hardly ever used the touchscreen except to use it in tablet mode to draw with the stylus. And even then I wished I had a separate device to draw on because I would have to unplug monitors keyboards etc to put it in tablet mode. So now that I have the MacBook I have an iPad and don't miss the lack of a touchscreen.

This is my favorite channel. It's always a pleasure to see how much mental gymnastics are necessary to make these videos

This is the first time that I believe an explanation is a cop out. If Apple truly didn’t believe in extra functionality in using a touch screen and keyboard, the Magic Keyboard wouldn’t exist.

The real reason is because it would dig deep into iPad sales. That’s it. Nothing about tech or use. It’s about profit.

This is coming from someone who has and uses daily, a MacBook Pro, iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Funnily enough, just a couple days ago I used a Macbook for the first time in years and instinctively tried to use the screen as a touchscreen. I personally like touchscreens on laptops because I do not like trackpads. I generally just use a mouse, but in the situations where I have to use someone else's laptop, it's nice to be able to use the touchscreen.

All that said, we've seen how clunky Windows is as it tries to juggle standard input and touch input in the same OS. There's just no intuitive way to handle the duality. Since Apple puts such a huge emphasis on simplicity (sometimes to a fault), I could never see them trying to make a combo OS.

I used to think I don't care about touchscreen until I got Microsoft Surface pro. Touchscreen is simply convenient. Sometimes you just want to quickly close a window, reaching for a mouse and moving the cursor to the "x" just isn't as convenient as simply touching the x with your finger. Also trackpads are simply bad at their job, a mouse is the best but oftentimes it's just not there

I tried windows laptops with touchscreens, and using a touch screen in browsing and reading is the most comforting and convinent way to do so.

I don't agree with this explanation, touchscreens in laptops is not by any means gimmick.

I am talking based on experience

Q: Why MacBooks don’t have a touch screen?
A: It makes way more sense this way.
Period.

Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to use it. It is nice to have the option. Sometimes reaching up to move a video back to a certain spot is faster and easier than a mouse, touch pad, or keyboard. MacOS is based on the kernel as the BSD OS. A unix legacy OS. Many Linux users like having the option for when the time calls for a touch interaction. If a user would prefer other means they can.

Thanks for this video! I was always wondering why it didn’t have touchscreen

So, to resume the video:
1. It’s inconvenient for the user experience.
2. It will take unnecessary space for it’s under use.
