The Diary of Anne Frank is a 1959 film based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name, which was in turn based on the diary of Anne Frank. It was directed by George Stevens, with a screenplay by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. It is the first film version of both the play and the original story, and features three members of the original Broadway cast.
Plot:
In 1945, as a truckload of war survivors stops in front of an Amsterdam factory at the end of World War II, Otto Frank (Joseph Schildkraut) gets out and walks inside. After climbing the stairs to a deserted garret, Otto finds a girl's discarded glove and sobs, then is joined and comforted by Miep Gies (Dodie Heath) and Mr. Kraler (Douglas Spencer), office workers who shielded him from the Nazis. After stating that he is now all alone, Otto begins to search for the diary written by his youngest daughter, Anne. Miep promptly retrieves it for him and he receives solace reading the words written by Anne three years earlier. The action moves back to July 1942, and Anne (Millie Perkins) begins by chronicling the restrictions placed upon Jews that drove the Franks into hiding over the spice factory. Sharing the Franks' hiding place are the Van Daans (Lou Jacobi and Shelley Winters) and their teenage son, Peter (Richard Beymer). Kraler, who works in the office below, and Miep, his assistant, have arranged the hideaway and warn the families that they must maintain strict silence during daylight hours while the workers are there. On the first day, the minutes drag by in silence. After work, Kraler delivers food and a box for Anne compiled by Otto, which contains her beloved photos of movie stars and a blank diary. In the first pages of the diary, she describes the strangeness of never being able to go outside or breathe fresh air. She states that everybody is good at heart.
As the months pass, Anne's irrepressible energy reasserts itself and she constantly teases Peter, whose only attachment is to his cat, Moushie. Isolated from the world outside, Otto schools Anne and her sister, Margot (Diane Baker), as the sounds of sirens and bombers frequently fill the air. Mrs. Van Daan passes the time by recounting fond memories of her youth and stroking her one remaining possession, the fur coat given to her by her father. The strain of confinement causes the Van Daans to argue and pits the strong-willed Anne against her mother, Edith Frank (Gusti Huber). One day, Kraler brings a radio to the attic, providing the families with ears onto the world. Soon after, he asks them to take in another person, a Jewish dentist named Albert Dussell (Ed Wynn). When Van Daan complains that the addition will diminish their food supply, Dussell recounts the dire conditions outside, in which Jews suddenly disappear and are shipped to concentration camps. When Dussell confirms the disappearance of many of their friends, the families' hopes are dimmed.
One night, Anne dreams of seeing one of her friends in a concentration camp and wakes up screaming. In October 1942, news comes of the Allied landing in Africa but the bombing of Amsterdam intensifies, fraying the refugees' already ragged nerves. During Hanukkah, Margot longingly recalls past celebrations and Anne produces little presents for everyone. When Van Daan abruptly announces that Peter must get rid of Moucshi because he consumes too much food, Anne protests. Their argument is cut short when they hear a prowler break in the front door and the room falls silent. Peter then sends an object crashing to the floor while trying to catch Moushie, and the startled thief grabs a typewriter and flees. A watchman notices the break-in and summons two police officers, who search the premises, shining their flashlights onto the bookcase that conceals the attic entrance. The families wait in terror until Moushie knocks a plate from the table and mews, reassuring the officers that the noise was caused by a common cat. After they leave, Otto, hoping to foster faith and courage, leads everyone in a Hanukkah song.

Mr. Frank, your daughter has not put you to shame. You were a wonderful man and person to the world. You did the best you could in a situation most would give up in. Your daughter Anne has been a beacon of hope, peace, liberty, and kindness for the world. RIP to Anne, Mr. Frank, and all the victims.

This movie is far too underappreciated. Loved it since I was a kid. Had a major crush on Millie Perkins because of this film. It has one of the most successful uses of a single sound to cause such a pure emotion or a cacophony of emotions, absolute dread and fear. That reoccurring siren throughout the film, no matter when, makes your heart drop for the characters and the utter fear that it represents. That was magnificent of George Stevens.

I fell in love with Anne Frank in high school. I'm 61 now this still breaks my heart for all of them and I feel so bad for Anne never able to experience life. She had a huge impact on the world in the short time she had here, can you imagine what she would have accomplished had she lived?

Anne's father had to carry that burden (or legacy) of survival until the day he died. I can't fathom, nor would I want to imagine what they all had to endure.😢
A time in history that should never be repeated. Sadly, the people of this World have not learned from their sins.
P.S. - It's a good movie, that puts a 'romanticized spin' on a very ugly time.
Pray every day that we redeem ourselves...

So proud to be a relative of a participant in the Berlin Airlift, bringing food and supplies behind the warfront.

This March I will be playing Anne in a play at my local theater. I watched this to understand her life better and to get myself into character. Her story is so important and I’m thrilled to share it with others. Seeing this made me realize just how important it is to share. Anne’s words are so strong. She was a strong young woman. Remember her. She wanted to be remembered ❤️

The sound of the door buzzer at the end and the knocking… fills the heart with such dread. This was an amazing film when I watched it in the 90’s as a child…

Millie Perkins, born in 1938, played Anne Frank in the movie “The Diary of Anne Frank” from 1959. Millie didn’t know anything about Anne Frank, but when she read her diary “it just immediately hit me in my heart. I got it right away. I knew how important it was.”
📽
In 1950s survivors and their relatives rarely spoke about the Holocaust and the film helped break the silence.
📽
After Otto Frank meet Millie Perkins, he wrote: “her eyes first impressed me - dark eyes - very tender, with faith and sincerity /.../ Anne’s eyes were very similar and very noticeable. She did not have brown eyes - they were grey /.../ Millie has a movement of her hands, like Anne had - and she has a little trick of bending her fingers backward, just as Anne did. She take care of herself (her personal grooming), just as Anne did. Anne would not go without having her hair combed, nails done - she was very soignee - very neat, as Millie seems to be /.../ I am confident that Millie will represent Anne in a very natural way.”

I was 4-5 years old when saw it in a theater in the city of Isfahan in Iran close to the restaurant where my father was working. I saw it twice then. Forgotten most of the details, but there were enough of them to readily recognize it! Good memory from my childhood days. Thank you.

I can't believe how beautiful Diane Baker is in this movie. All of the casts really brought this movie together. 10 out of 10;)) 👍👍.

I love the scene where Miep gives them the radio. It must’ve felt so good to be able to hear music again for the first time in months, and then the news right from the source, too.

A lot of versions
movies about The Dairy of Anne Frank has published but this is oldest version and best. The last kiss of moment between Anne and Peter while before arrest by SS was most deeply moved.

I’ve seen this movie many times & Anne’s story always makes me think about the little joys of life, despite all the hardship. I can relate, as I’ve recently been released from hospital with my new prosthetic leg (though I’ll never be able to walk long distance) & other health issues yet to be treated … but I’m blessed with a good family, even the little ones being there for moral support. Funnily enough, I’ve only just found this film on YouTube & coincidentally, I also found a copy of Anne Frank’s diary (complete & unabridged) in a charity shop & had the immediate urge to buy it. It’s sitting by my bedside now, so perhaps I’ll read it tonight, in honour of that brave little girl. I’m not overly religious, but I do believe she’s reunited with her loved ones, including her beloved father. I truly can’t even begin to imagine the pain he must’ve felt, living until he was 91 years old before seeing his family again. Such a shame that the world hasn’t learned from Anne, though, about the stark & terrible reality of war as a whole… 🥺💖📓

I’m sorry but the introduction of Dussel and his allergies to cats and that cough is pure brilliant!!!! This Dussel is HILARIOUS 😂😂😂😂 And he came with those hands when Van Daan stole the bread 👊🏾 And maaaan Edith Frank wanted ALL THE SMOKE when Van Daan stole the bread!!

And how on Earth is Mrs. Van Daan going to get her knitting done with all that racket!!

Margot Frank in this movie is gorgeous!

Though this is based on the play and not the actual book, it’s still my favorite. I’ve seen quite a few adaptations and this is most enjoyable for me. One of the things I love about the film are the small details that showed such an adorable chemistry between Anne and Peter. One example is the scene before Anne sings; as soon as the words let’s go are said from Anne, Peter looks up at her and moves closer till he’s next to her (showing us that he’s feeling upset at the idea of of them leaving and not seeing her again.) he even shifts his gaze away nervously when she looks at him. He is also first to join her singing. And their date scene! Such fire between those two as he brings his fingers closer to hers along a pencil, and then traces her hands with it. Quiet shy talk, but lined with such underlining electrical tension! Truly wonderful acting.

I cried at the end, there’s even a film of of what happened to them in the concentration camp and it was horrible. But this is definitely one of my Favorite movies of all time.

I love Ed Wynn in everything I ever saw him in! He seemed as gentle as he sounded and looked. A great actor ! Came back to my comment to add, that I've seen several different movies about Anne, but this one is still the most intense! I found myself holding my breath and trying not to make a sound too! I still cry about this tragedy.😔
