Trip hop is underrated . And Beth Gibbons voice is so coldly innocent.

Portishead is basically the essence of electronic music. They’re what “the Pixies” were for Alternative Music. Just untouchable, and will always be pioneers instead of just common rock stars.

that voice is a human treasure. We must preserve it somehow

All Portishead songs sound like the personification of some kind of incomprehensibly vast abstract cosmic force trying to sing a lullaby for tiny, finite mortals, but this one especially sounds like something you'd pick up like impossibly coming from inside a supermassive black hole.
Real "guys I don't think humans are supposed to be here..." energy.
Literally "sublime, " in the original sense of the word. I absolutely love it. I have this song (along with a lot of other Portishead) on my playlist for soaring around the universe in Space Engine and it takes the experience to an entirely different level. "Divine upper reaches / Still holding on / This ocean will not be grasped" indeed...

This is one of the rarest moments in comments section when you hear praises for the drummer rather than lead singer or guitarist. Of course Clive Deamer is very good.

Takes me back to life in Bristol - many many years ago.

Man, her live voice is very similar to the original song. This is rare.

I am new fan. I found this on my Apple Music because I always randomly add new music. I’m so glad to find this band 11 years after this song was posted!

Inside your pretending
Crimes have been swept aside
Somewhere where they can forget
Divine upper reaches
Still holding on
This ocean will not be grasped
All for nothing
Did you really want
Did you really want
Did you really want
Did you really want
Refuse to surrender
Strung out until ripped apart
Who dares, dares to condemn
All for nothing
Did you really want
Did you really want
Did you really want
Did you really want

Amazing band. Very unique.
Portishead really got me into trip hop and the likes of
Massive Attack, UNKLE, Sneaker Pimps, Tricky, DJ Krush, DJ Shadow, HTDA, ALLFLAWS
