The Wreck of Endurance #shorts

Показать описание
In the Antarctic Deep Sea, the shipwreck of Ernest Shackleton's ship Endurance rests at a depth of 10,000 feet. It has laid there for more than 100 years, and yet unlike all other known shipwrecks, the wood has not decayed. It is preserved in the icy waters, where wood-eating bacteria and invertebrates are not present due to the minimal amounts of natural wood that makes its way to the sea floor here.

Behold, the Antarctic Crab, Captain of the HMS Endurance as it sails across the Weddell sea at the speed of tectonic plates. That lil guy is one lucky chap.

For some reason, there’s something deeply melancholic and beautiful about it resting down there in the dark, where no one will know or see.

After the Endurance sank, Shackleton took 4 men and sailed over 800 miles across the Southern Ocean from Elephant Island to South Georgia Island. They did this in a leaking 22 foot open boat, the James Caird. The voyage took more than two weeks, and they made it with only the most primitive navigation and inadequate supplies. Two of the men were near death when they arrived. Then Shackleton, Worsley and Crean crossed the mountainous interior of South Georgia on a 36 hour forced march over mountains and across glaciers to reach rescue. The James Caird still exists today, and can be seen at Dulwich College in south London.

Endurance by Alfred Lansing is the absolute Pinnacle of survival stories! I've read it over and over, just a superb book.

Good choice for a short. Your research on brine pools and whale falls would be good shorts, too. Hope your work is going well! Looking forward to new videos!

What's surprising is how remarkably well a wooden ship has remained intact. Also didn't know the water she sank was that deep. It'd be nice if tbey could recover the wheel or something to bring to a museum

Very cool. I was so stoked when I had heard they found the ship. I had watched several documentaries on Shackleton. Very cool.

I remember the day of this discovery..
It is the most beautiful ship wreck ever discovered..
Deep sea, lack of oxygen, and very cold water..
All these three factors combined for the preservation of a unique time capsule.
Named "Endurance".. That is a freaky fun fact !
🤘😉
