The answers to the practice questions are below. Just click on "Read more". Don't forget to let me know what you think about China and Africa! Is China investing in Africa an attempt to gain political power? Should other countries be concerned? Let me know in the comments!

1.D
2.A
3.B
4.B
5. China has been investing in infrastructure in Africa to gain new political alliances with countries. Countries that vote with them in the United Nations or support chinese foreign policy issues get more loans and more investments from China. This has motivated some countries to start having more pro China policies and has helped China gain new allies. China is also taking advantage of new urban cities in Africa to support their own economy with cheap labor.
6. A choke point is a geographical area that you must pass in order to get to a destination. They are important because often they are the quickest route to a destination, closing of these points would result in longer routes which could add 1, 000 of miles to a route.
7. A shatterbelt is when a region is caught between larger external powers who are fighting each other, whereas a cultural shatterbelt is when two or more cultures within a region come into contact and conflict with each other. A cultural shatterbelt does not have foreign powers influencing the region.

Can we say that Ireland is a Shatterbelt?

I thought territoriality (question 4) was defending an area not influencing others. I chose D instead of B. Could I justify this to be correct?

Are shatterbelts similar to buffer states?

I thought neolocalism is the bringing of a culture in a place not using power to influence other areas

I think u were wrong in identifying Kashmir as a shatterbelt region. It is Afganistan there, in eastern Europe u hv Ukraine, Belarus etc.

Kashmir is never a buffer state or shatterbelt region.
