I think not only people have dignity, but some animals as well. We can notice it in their behaviour, especially those which are closely socialised with people, like cats. They definitely have some kind of dignity when they are not hungry. But a true sense of dignity, as we understand it, belongs to people.

Dignity and respect are 2 different things. Respect is a form of appreciation and even admiration – from Latin respectus "regard, a looking at, " literally "act of looking back (or often) at one. Respect is something that is *earned, * it is not at all a right, it's a privilege. We may or may not respect someone.

Dignity on the other hand is not earned. Dignity is the attitude we normally have toward other people who didn't wronged us in any way. In fact, the more civilized a society, the more it dignifies the worst of its members (by eradicating "cruel and unusual punishment", torture, capital punishment, life sentences etc.) So, you have every right to have absolutely no respect for a murderer, but you don't have the right to treat him beneath human dignity.

In fact, dignity goes beyond humans. Even animals have the right to live in dignity. The more civilized the society, the more elevated the standard of animal dignity. You have every right not to respect your dog. But you have no right to beat him or starve him.

Treating others with dignity means treating them in a way that is at least as good as you yourself would like to be treated.

Dignity is a given that can't be taken away.
Respect is earned.
That being so, can we treat with dignity someone we don't respect?

I was astounded when the emperor presented himself without his clothing to the public. And yet still kept a dignified composure in his stride.

Some people have it some dont. Dignity is self honor and self respect. Which requires a foundation of character. You cant have dignity if you have low standards and values. Self respect is required in order to have a sense of dignity.

Its not surprising to me that 'dignity' is hard to define. I am from India. Our constitution promises to secure several fundamental rights to all Indian citizens. Among them is a popular phrase which went to Honourable Supreme Court(Indian) for legal interpretation and definition, that 'every citizen has the right to live with choice and "dignity" '. And the descriptions they have given are very controversial.

dignity
DIGNITY, n. L., worthy.

True honor; nobleness or elevation of mind, consisting in a high sense of propriety, truth and justice, with an abhorrence of mean and sinful actions; opposed to meanness. In this sense, we speak of the dignity of mind, and dignity of sentiments. This dignity is based on moral rectitude; all vice is incompatible with true dignity of mind. The man who deliberately injures another, whether male or female, has no true dignity of soul.

Propriety is maintaining a state of mind that is morally sound that results in thoughts, words, actions, and good moral character that is socially beneficial, favorable, and acceptable to ones Community.
