Due to the Treaty of Tordesillas mechanic you don't really get multiple colonial nations in the same colonial area.

NGL I love this so much. I pla colonial fairly often and this makes sure no colony gets too powerful if you have two or even three that share one region. It also is fun for roleplay and creating interesting new world boarders.

If you fully annex an overlord, you inherit their subjects. This applies to colonial overlords as well.

I figured colonisation was broken whenever I see the unholy border gore of my colonial subjects. I've had my Caribbean subject somehow gain land in the Midwest, my Canadian subject bludgeoning its way into Louisiana like a winded bull, while my Australian subject takes its sweet time colonising the rest of the continent. Not like there are other competitors to snatch up land like the Spanish, or Portuguese, or Vijayanagar (yes, they went colonial in my run).

Honestly this is probably the best thing about colonialism in eu4 Imo. Otherwise it’s just incredibly basic, inaccurate and frustrating because everytime you want to colonize a province Portugal steals it.

Everything in EU4 happens too quick relative to actual history. The new world is all colonised by 1600, the 30 years war starts in mid 1500s, the only thing thats slow is the Ottoman expansion.
