Ep. 5: Crossing the Bay of Biscay: Breathtakingly Beautiful and Deeply Terrifying

Accompany us sailing around the world from the very beginning!

We are Anne & Marcel, liveaboards on a small sailboat called "Zeezot". We gave away all our possessions that found no place onboard or which are no longer of any use in our new travelling life style.
Mid of July we crossed the Bay of Biscay with our sailboat. And the Atlantic showed us two faces; a beautiful one and an ugly one. But it was all worth it. Especially when at the other end of the Biscay Spain is welcoming us and we can sail the awesome Rias and cast anchor in remote bays.

Nice story. In a few weeks it might be my turn to make the Ushant to A Coruña crossing.

Thank you for sharing your experience from Les Sables-d'Olonne. We will also pick up our boat from Les Sables-d'Olonne, and are interested to see what stops sailors make from this location. Great to know it's only 2 days to the first stop. I wish you the best in your travels. We won't be picking up our boat until 2024, but are excited to hear about others journeys.

Marcel, I had that same feeling a few years ago during a delivery from Kats to Lisbon. Confusing seas and some strong winds as well when approaching the spanish coast of La Coruña. The difference was that it was a much smaller boat (30 feet), no autopilot, nor radar or ais. I too, felt a bit scared and I must confess that in the last night I entered "survival" mode in order not to loose control. After all, it was my first Biscay crossing and despite all that I have read and watched before, nothing prepared me for that. The next time... if it will happen, at least I know what I can count with and, I guess, I will be better prepared. Fair winds and good luck for both of you in your journey. SV Tulip

Wow, this is a great Video. Thanks for sharing your feelings before crossing the bay! Your are an example for good seamanship. Allways wearing a life vest and a life line when moving on deck outside the habour, i like that! Congrats for crossing the bay. Maybe good that it was not so easy, so you get an impression of what will happen on the Atlantic. You know, the sea will be much more challenging there ! So it is a step by step training for you.😉 take care!
