I think that the TR7 is far from ridiculous. I now have both a hard top and a soft top and absolutely love them.

I had one just like that in 1986, it was a great car, loved it

I had a TR7 model when I was five...and I've loved it ever since.

If I ever get the chance I'm buying one. It was killed off too soon.

The plastic TR7 dash is a very cool dash, it's a cool design and it comes apart real easily without drama.

My father's girlfriend drove one when they were current. Frankly, it was a 2-door saloon more than it was a sports car.
There just wasn't really anything sporty about it.
For a year or so after its introduction, it had some visual impact...
But it quickly became a mid-range Dolomite replacement with no rear seats.

Wow, still lots of negative comments regarding the TR7. I'm biased as i have one, i bought it in 1989 when i was 16 years old. Used as my main car from 18 years old, all year round, never let me down, comfortable, spacious etc. Currently in the garage getting a V8 transplant. Each to their own i suppose but seeing it next to an MGB of the same era in this video just shows how far ahead of its time the styling was

Regardless of the marque, I've never been a fan of the wedge look.
But it's not ugly. The proportions are good.

If you truly grew up in the 80's, you loved this car. Anyone at this guys age will never get it.

I reckon the DeLorean may have the edge on controversy. I've always liked the TR7. It's unmistakable. Should have had the Sprint engine from the beginning.

I had a USA spec 1980 TR7 "Drophead Coupe" and loved it. It was even the same color as in this video with the same wheelcovers. (Mine had the tan plaid tartan seats) If I knew then what I know now about how to properly care for it, I'd still have it today. The reputation for quality was ruined by the early Speke produced cars. Mine was a Canley built car, which were far better and the final Solihull built cars (late 1980 through 1981) were better still. Strict USA emission control additions to the engine also sadly reduced the already underpowered 104 HP down to just 92. Also, around the same time the TR7 moved to Canley, British Leyland kind of went away, and TR7's became J.R.T. (Jaguar, Rover, Triumph) cars.

I laugh every time you say Triumphs were upscale and that MGs were refined. I was deciding between a triumph and an MG. When compared to a Midget, the spitfire seems cheap (the interior), not upscale. I’ve always thought triumphs were lesser than MGs: outdated body on frame and generally not as well sorted. Their strategy was to put in a bigger motor than the MG and call it good. But, I’m in the US and don’t have any experience with the Dolomite, Herald, Vitesse.
And calling MG refined is too funny. Lever arm shocks, leaf springs. They make for a characterful ride, but I wouldn’t call them refined. Maybe compared to a Triumph they are refined!

You have to drive the 7 with the Rover V8. then it's a great car.

My first car was a MKIV Spitfire that I bought used in 1979. The styling of that car played a big part in my attraction to it. I never associated British sports cars with quality, reliability, or performance — not even as a kid buying my first car. For me the real appeal of British sports cars was their charm. In this area the TR7 seemed to fall well short of the others.
