Calling van der Velde's crime an "assault" rather than the crime of child rape is an insult to the victim and your audience. Call a spade a spade.

Clarification: #25 was convicted of assaulting a 12 year old girl he met online. Very big difference in saying he assaulted a “girl” and specifying she was so young.

My grandfather was a decathlete and long jumper who was supposed to compete at the Olympics in 1936 (he was 19 at the time). But he was a Mennonite and he boycotted in protest of Hitler. He ended up serving in the Army Air Corps (later became the air force) and flew planes in WWII. He never got to compete in the Olympics. BUT he became a high school track coach and coached all three of his daughters (including my mom) to Junior Olympic Gold Medals.

That they’ve allowed a convicted child rapist to compete is a stain on the Olympics and very telling of the lacking morality of the Dutch Olympic Committee and those who support him. Truly appalling

While not specific to the Olympics, the sex abuse by Larry Nassar and overall abuse by Bela Karolyi's training complex deserves some mention, given how closely tied they all were to a few Olympic gymnastics teams.

Very strange to put him on the world stage to represent your country, especially at an event that is meant to create unity.

why did you censor yourself by saying what the Dutch dude did was "assault" ???
he RAPED a 12 year old girl when he himself was 19, and you simply pass this off as "assault" if you're too scared to use the word rape, you could have at least said
"sexual assault on a minor".
