How to make Ferromagnetic Fluid

Magnetic silly putty was pretty awesome, but it's time to take it to the next level with ferromagnetic fluid!

This is simply magnetic powder in water. A ferrofluid is a fluid that gets magnetized when in the presence of a magnet.

I've read comments here and on the instructables page that this isn't actually Ferromagnetic Fluid. Can someone tell me what this actually is? I would love to take this to my chemistry class. Thanks!

Putting iron in water isn't ferrofluid.
