Ferrofluid vs magnet

Ferrofluid is a liquid that's attracted to a magnet, and it like to form a lot of small spikes. Ferrofluid was first invented by NASA in 1963, and it's made by suspending super small particles of iron in a solvent.

I actually did a Science Fair experiment using this substance in 7th grade. It was basically cleaning oil out of water by applying ferrofluid and running a manet through the water to collect as much magnetized oil as possible. I ended up going to the Illinois State Science Fair and getting a Gold award!

Btw, never knew about the spikes when pure ferrofluid is close to a magnet. Learn something new everyday!!

In the early days of magnetic tape, ferrofluid was used for physically editing audiotape and videotape.

The editor applied ferrofluid to the tape, then viewed the magnetic pulses through a microscope, to see exactly where to cut the tape with a razor blade. After the edit was made, the editor spliced the tape, then cleaned off the ferrofluid.

A less-messy method involved using a 3M viewer, which was a magnifying lens, filled with magnetic powder. When you put it on a piece of magnetic tape, the powder showed the pulses on the tape.
