There was a great video I watched speculating on if Kratos is becoming weaker. The video goes into great detail about the first fight between Thor and Kratos, and explains that the moment Kratos "showed Thor the real God of War", you could see the horror in Kratos' expression that he lost control. He is holding back almost the entire time. Because the last time he gave it his all, he wiped out a pantheon. Not a few gods. Everything from Earth was destroyed. Thor killed most of the giants, but only Kratos destroyed every human, God and creature. Thor's genocide is nothing compared to mass extinction
