I am from an underpopulated country (Brunei). You can stand for one minute in the busiest place in my country, only 10 to 15 people would walk past you (on average). Then, this year, I went to Singapore and Hong Kong for vacation. Oh boy... it's crazy. People were everywhere! I was instinctively looking for a spot where I could at least be on my own for a minute -- it was an impossible task! Every sidewalk, every alley, every little corner -- people! I even tried to walk as far as I could thinking I could find a quiet place. Nope! Then again, after settling down well a few days later, I thought I was going to miss the continuous hustle and bustle when I got back home. You know what, I kinda do. But, when I think about it again, I'd prefer this quietude and serenity. I still remember talking to this taxi driver at 11pm in Singapore about how weird I felt looking at the roads and there were still many cars around (moving and not stuck in a jam).. equivalent to a "rush hour traffic jam" in my country. lol

The one child policy was to reduce population growth, not increase it.

Also 500 million to one billion = 100% increase, not 50% increase.

One disappointment in my younger days was during my service with the British army the Royal Artillery, in which I served, stopped posting to Hong Kong so I never had the chance to go there. I met guys that had served there and they told me that it was an amazing place.

You should know the Hu Line ( Heihe-Tengchong Line), which proposed by a geographer Hu Huanyong in 1935. This Hu Line shows two different parts of China. The west part has more than 57% land but only 6% population, and the east part has less 43% land and 94% population. This situation never change in the past century. And about the population of China in the old times, the peak values for each dynasty is: Zhou 30 millions (1046 BC~256 BC), Qin 20millions (221BC~206BC), Han 56 millions ( 202BC ~ 220AD), Jin 16 millions ( 265 ~ 420), Tang 50+ millions ( 618~907), Song 70+ millions (960~1279), Yuan same as Song (1271~1368), Ming 60~80 millions (1368~1644), Qing(1644~1912) begin with 60 millions and got the high peak 430 millions in 1851 then reduced by civil wars. It should be thank for American crops coming in, especially corn and sweet potato, otherwise Qing dynasty's population couldn't went through 100 millions.
