I bought this same hardback set for $240 from a third party seller on Amazon. The set is brand new, unopened, in the slipcase. Silly me, I actually wanted the separate volumes, easier for me to hold than these big books, but I didn't pay close enough attention when ordering. Wish I'd found your video sooner! :)

Thanks so much for posting this vid. Currently I have all 12 volumes (each a separate book) and they are amazing. I would love to get this edition too to add to the collection

Dust covers are irritating. I bought a copy of Tzu's The Art of War, and his portrait was nicer on the dust cover. So I cut it off and glued it to the book, and threw the dust cover away. I now have a unique copy of tAoW. I will soon record a video of less high quality yet somewhat unusual editions of TLotR trilogy that I bought for less than a Euro. It may be unique to Youtube.

(continuation from my other comment)
4: The Shaping of Middle-Earth. An early Silmarillion and the first versions of the Annals of the First Age and before it.
5: The Lost Road and other writings. The Lost Road is an unfinished novel about Númenor and stuff. Also includes the post-4 Silmarillion.
6 to 9: The Return of the Shadow. The Treason of Isengard. The War of the Ring. Sauron Defeated. Describe the developement of LOTR. The latter includes details about Númenor.

These books are beautiful. I love the way that they are made to look as though they could be found in an archive. I'm trying to decide, however, whether I should but these editions or the newly released individual books of the History of Middle-earth series. They are £40 each and there are 14 of them, including the index, so I'm stuck!

These are the 12 books (put into three volumes) detailing the creative process of Tolkien creating the history and languages and peoples of Middle-Earth.

I was looking at getting all the books as paperback. But by the time i looled at the price pf all 12 volumes i was better off getting this collection which was on sale for £123 (new).

It says on the slip that comes with the books that it is a limited print.
Anyone know how many were made?

Hey, wait. The History of Middle-Earth describes the developement of Tolkien's legendarium, mainly of the Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion. The books include early drafts of the works and some unpublished (and often unfinished) texts and essays by Tolkien.

Here are the 12 volumes:
1 and 2: Lost Tales. Earliest version of the Silmarillion plot. Finished.
3: The Lays of Beleriand. Unfinished pieces of poetry regarding Túrin and Beren and Lúthien.

You haven't shown the most important thing and that's the type of binding. But I hope for such a nice book it is a sewn binding.

The ones that come separate are exactly like the ones in this video? (I suppose the only difference is the slipcase). Thank you...

I got a question. Is there things that are left out or shortened in these books compared to the seperate books? Or is it the same books cramped into 3 big books?

(continuation of my other comment)
10 and 11: Morgoth's Ring. The War of the Jewels. The later Silmarillion.
12: The Peoples of Middle-earth. The best of the 12, maybe not including the Lost Tales. Describes the developement of the appendix of LOTR and includes essays and two unfinished novels: Tal-Elmar and The New Shadow. The former speaks about Númenorean colonization seen by the wild folk and the latter is a sequel of LOTR.

HoME is Christopher T. analysis of the father's work. Nothing else.
