Like many breeds, shih tzus are more prone to certain health issues. One that we didn’t know about until it needed a big surgery was eyelashes growing on the inner side of their eyelids.

My shih tzu had a foggy eye and kept scratching at it. The first few vets we visited didn’t identify the right thing, so we weren’t sure why her eye was still swollen and foggy after following the vet’s instructions. Eventually we found a pet opthamologist that had the tools to see both the scratch on her eye and the inverse eyelashes.

So, if you have a shih tzu, make sure you are at least aware of a veterinary opthamologist in your area.

Mikki. My girl is EXACTLY the same colour as yours, and her personality is 100% as you described. She's a full time job. She used to bite me when I tried to groom her, her legs got matted, it was really hard work to trim her fur in between her snapping at me. But now she is sitting on my lap with me, watching your video as I nod my head in agreement to every point you made she's starring back at me with so much love. She loves me. I love her. But she can drive me nuts. The separation anxiety is a big worry. I would kindly suggest that this might not be a good breed unless you want to really put in the time to groom them for probably an hour daily. She does expect to be hand fed too.

I've had three shih tzus and they are great little loving dogs. They are shadow dogs. You can teach them they want to please. Everything he is saying is true. They are wonderful dogs.

It depends on the personality. My baby was easy to train. Remember the fur is like human hair, so combing and brushing every day can irritate them.

I love my little shih tzu boy but I've definitely dealt with all these challenges- especially the stubbornness part. The one thing you cannot train out of them is the stubbornness 😂. They will listen and love to please you but every now and then they'll just be like, "Nope" or pretend that they don't hear / know what you say even though they've done it thousands of times.

My old boy is 16 going on 17. He is still so handsome regardless of the fact that he is half blind, half deaf, with heart issues, kidney issues, arthritis and sensitive stomach. He sleeps most of the time but we love him to bits and hope that he will stay with us for another 2 more years.

My shih tzu just passed away on 6/01/2021. She was 19 years old I loved her. I cry every day. Life will never be the same. She was picky I hand fed her all 19 years. Love her.
