As a pure gringo who learned Spanish, the best advice I got was, "Spanish isn't English. So, get over it." That helped me stop thinking about it from the English perspective and understand it as a different way to present ideas.

lentes have lenses to focus, windows are vents to block wind and need Vidrio, the vessel that holds water is a vase and you drink from the vessel so it's a vaso. The language is more logically derivative from the actions and purpose and has more specificity as opposed to english where we use "glass" to refer to anything made from the material regardless of use.

I think English is the odd one out.
In my native language and surrounding countrys we use 2 different words for glas and glasses.
Glass - Brille
Glas - Bril
Verre - Lunettes
