can we get a 2019 update covering the same topic, maybe geared towards the newer monitors

As a computer technician and someone that gets asked these questions on nearly a daily basis for a number of different professions and specialties, this video is wonderful. The people who gave all this amazing information a thumbs down need to reevaluate their life or lack there of. Thank you Tony for making something that appears to be a foreign language to so many (computer components) easy to understand. I appreciate all you do for us budding photographers and in my opinion you are underappreciated.

Hi TonyThank you for all your great videos! The rotation speed of a hard drive is constant from the center to the outer edge of the disk platter. The R/W head assembly starts from the inner hub of the disk and travels to the outer edge of the disk platter . Thus, files residing closer to the center are accessable sooner than those on the outer edge.We have 2 considerations represented, thus, from inner to outer and from left to right (across). The inner tracks have a shorter distance of travel verses the outer track distance.

Great info - such a tricky topic. Look forward to finally meeting up with you guys - hopefully later this year!

Tony, around 8:00 ... the drive spins at the same (angular) speed. An empty hard-drive needs smaller actuations of the read/write head since all the data is in the center of the drive. Once the drive become filled with data the head needs to make a lot of travel just to find where the data is actually located. This is also why you see "seek times" specified for hard-drivers.

Nice wrap up Tony, always wondered what you guys and girls use.
I use a Macbook Pro mid 2012 with 16gb RAM, suits my needs perfectly.
I was working in Cambodia for a few years and you really need a laptop instead of a PC. You just spend so much time on the move a PC is not an option really.
Great show by the way.

Really valuable video... I feel a lot more prepared to make smarter choices about my tech now.

(also, your career change is really motivating!)

People's make sure to get a good IPS monitor!!! You can have the best cameras and your finished photo's can still look like shit do to a bad monitor cause of inaccurate color correction and grading.

Thanks Tony. I've just bought a Panasonic HC-VXF1 camera and was wondering why it was jumping when I was trying to edit it.  I had already bought that camera and an Olympus TG5 and thought  "that's my budget."  But the budget had to be stretched to include a new computer and I appreciate that due to this video I had some knowledge of what I needed.  Thanks again.

Windows... I'm relieved Tony!  I serve as the chair of an advisory committee on Art and Design for business in my State. It's always the case, that when we talk about necessary gear, I'm the only one with windows based operating systems and desk top computers. Everyone else states firmly, that "all creatives" should be working with apple systems. Thank you for this excellent video! I shall be passing it along to my committee members :)

Your review and explanation is excellent thanks. I want to up grade my HD to SSD like you suggest. Can you tell me about how much SSD storage I need to run Windows 10. Is it possible to use the SSD just for my video editor (Cyberlink Powerdirector) and use a Sata drive for the rest of my software that doesn't require the speed. IE; word, excel, etc... etcc.

So I'm done with Mac and looking for a PC for pro level video editing. I'm looking at the high end stuff (like Digital Storm) but right now I'm in the process of learning what everything is so I can figure out exactly what I need. My question is, would one very high end graphics card be enough for me? I make videos that require a lot of editing and special effects. Also, you didn't mention cores. Are more cores necessarily better? The Digital Storm has 18 - is that overkill? Lastly, what sort of motherboard should I get? I know basically nothing about motherboards, or how to choose one.

Awesome video. I was thinking about building another myself. I put everything in the cart and just haven't pressed the purchase button. I will go back and see what I can add/subtract. Thanks for the video once again.

I think next video must be about Monitors, as they are huge part of workflow.

You are so right about backup storage. I spent months doing a "labor of love" documentary. Not long after posting all 8 segments on Youtube my hard drive died. Although the final project is still on Youtube I lost almost all of the the original files. So much for re-editing it.

Very helpful roundup, and definitely helping me make a better decision on a new pc even in 2023.
