Love your tutorials. Especially since I own a D3400 (December 2017). I agree with your findings and thoughts. The fact that I can video was a minor plus, but not what sold me on the camera. You are helping me enjoy and understand my entry level into DSLR cameras and photography. Thank you and keep up the great tutorials.

Is there a way to use a remote control for starting and stopping video taping with the Nikon D3400?

I'm currently using this camera to shoot Christmas concert footage for a nursery school and i'm actually finding it ok. Mainly because i'm using the camera mainly inside and in terms of audio i'm using a separate audio recorder with professional microphones in stereo. Overall I found it ok, I would consider buying a fixed aperture lense for the Nikon D3400 so that I can zoom in without the image dimming on Manual mode.

no mic input and bad face recog focus are BIG issues with this camera, I hope nikon can fix it (the face recog focus).
This is my problem:
When recording video alone using tripod, I need to lock the focus to myself using single servo AF, because using the FUll time servo made the lens try to focus (similar with face recog focus mode). If i have someone to half press the shutter, thats fine...but when recording alone...i am still figuring out to make it.

What I need is a remote that can lock focus while recording in video mode...i think thats the best option to lock focus while recording video alone...I tried using the nikon remote, but when the video recording is on, I press the remote and it took photo and STOP the video recording 😤
Anytought? Or other way

I have a question. When you’re recording the video, how are you able to keep the display without the information? When I record I just wanna see me, not the black bars on the top and bottom and not the information.

What really surprised is lack of ability to plug in external mic. I have a D3200 it has ability to plug in an external mic. Wonder why nikon dropped this feature, seems like a step backwards to me.

Very informative video, just wondering why you didn't adjust the shutter speed to be double the frame rate

My favorite is to use the miniature effect to film videos as it creates a very color saturated time lapse and I find that makes great b-roll. I was under the impression that you could not adjust the aperture while you're recording. You have to set it beforehand. But in your video shooting in aperture priority you made it sound like you could adjust it while you're recording? I would like it if you talked about shooting video in manual mode because I was under the impression you needed to have double the shutter speed of your frame rate. Does aperture priority then cause the shutter speed to automatically shoot at 1/50th of a second when your frame rate is set to 24 frames per second? I had a hard time getting the focus to work sometimes no matter what the adjustments I made in manual mode but I had not considered shooting in a priority mode for video so I will look into that. Unfortunately I don't have editing software on my laptop as my laptop is not powerful enough to run those easily so I edit using cell phone apps but unfortunately there are no image stabilization apps or plug-ins for mobile editing. There are however color grading filters available which is great. I find filming with my cell phone much easier because the display is large and it's very easy then to see what you're filming. With the camera I always have to lean my head down and as a result I'm not focusing on filming the scene but rather trying to look through a tiny LCD that does not flip up which makes the recording experience a bit frustrating. Perhaps you could talk about peripheral equipment that would work well with a d 3400 on a budget such as a plug-in monitor for video recording

I have a D3400. Did my first video in Fiji of a fire waking show. Worked just fine and I thought the quality was good. Pretty inexperienced with the camera and had everything on auto. What I have found, is that I can reduce wing noise by putting a tiny piece of tissue over the Mic.

Another great informative tips, something very different, i checked out your edited video clip and it's amazing.ive seen people bashing out this camera regarding it's video capabilities but i think you have managed to put on a great video showing people what you can actually do with this camera in terms of video mode, which isn't bad at all i guess.People say it's almost unusable which you proved in a way it's actually is not.Thank you for your video again.by the way is nikon d3300 any better than this camera regarding the video?

i just had to film with this camera, i didnt have the shaking issue that you had, i was using the stock 55mm lens, and also did not fall out of focus (maybe because i was recording in 60fps)
