hey alex i just wanted to put it out there that it being hard for you to cover someones shift or find another employee is not your employees problem. If someone needs to call out they need to call out. The ones doing it every week should just be let go.

I had a co-worker in valet that called me an hour before shift to cover for him because he wanted to go to a concert or something. I live 30 min away from the account and I was in my car driving home with a fresh pizza. This guy tried to guilt trip me into doing it and I found it ridiculous. He tried to pull a "I cover all these shifts for you all the time" when in fact I gave him the shift, it wasn't a cover. I did not help him at all.

Moral of the story, if you don't have enough respect to give me a heads up with adequate time, forget about getting help.

From a management perspective, I get why you'd not be happy about someone calling in sick, but you might want to think about the consequences of being immovable. For example, I have frequent migraines which result in being incapacitated from loss of vision and the constant pounding. Do you REALLY want to risk an Aventador for the sake of your ego, especially when you knew in advance of the risk? Plus, there's this certain federal law called the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 which states "reasonable accommodations are to be made without delay". If if were me and I notify you with 4+ hours of notice like in that text message example (1:31), and you dig your heels in, you wouldn't be getting another call. You'd be receiving a subpoena from both my attorney AND the Department of Labor.

I was always cautious about pressuring hungover people to come in to work if their duties included driving: there's a chance they've go residual alcohol in their system maybe putting them above the DUI limit.

Or maybe the manager should go cover the shift since they get paid more, and if someone is hungover u want them to come in and drive a possible 100k car?? That isn’t too smart but hey it’s your business and if they crash a car and you have to pay maybe instead of them learning their lesson .. then maybe you will learn

So the valet messages you at 3:44am when the shift starts at 7:30-8am but YOU don't wake up until an hour before their shift, it is their fault that you didn't check the message at 3:44am??😐

Why would I want someone who’s throwing up every 20 minutes in the back parking lot in my vehicle? Also you keep saying if they are “actually sick” then your not “insensitive”, yet you told the employee who told you he was sick that he needed to come into work? How would u know he’s not actually sick? Makes zero sense. When you get paid manager money, then you need to take care of manager duties.

You say that "other valet company owners" understand where you're coming from. I'd dare say that ANY manager or business owner with employees can commiserate with you on this. It's been my experience that some guys always manage to call out right after payday, especially if they've had a very good day or week of earnings. Or if that employee starts getting back-to-back days/weeks of above average earnings, suddenly he has more excuses to not come to work. Having been on both sides of this situation and knowing how it affects everyone, whenever I've done something irresponsible the night before work, I drag myself into work and tell the boss, "I feel like crap. But I made it here so I'm well enough to work."

even in a pre-covid world. I would not be very fond of a coughing and sniffling valet fetching my car

Normally, I think you have very good advive/viewpoints on the subject of young gentleman taking personal responsibility. However, I have to disagree with you on one issue. It is not the responsibility of an employee to get someone to cover their shift. That is the responsibility of an overseeing manager. Now should that employee be excusing themselves from duty 30 minutes before the end of a shift, no. The employee needs to provide proper notice before vacating a shift.

How do you deal with workers calling off due to personal emergencies for example: Cant find a babysitter, kids are sick, relative/friend in hospital or died, Need to deal with Damages to car / house ?

Employees should understand that it's a business and those last minute, weak excuses don't get you out of your responsibility of your shift.

Good morning sir, I’ve just recently started watching your videos., and I’d like to thank you for your time in making them and the valuable lessons. I’ve been fascinated by them and hope to keep watching them. If you could please answer this post I would really appreciate it. I would also like to know how you got started in valet services?, I ask that because I myself would like to get started in it as well, and what better person to show me the ropes than yourself.

With the covid thing couldn’t you request a doctors note on that? I know HIPPA and whatever. At my job if we take 3 days or more we are required to have a doctors note or FMLA certification. Curious about the HR aspect as a business owner. Do you have someone. That handles that for you?

As a potential customer I wouldn't want someone with so much as a mild cough in my car
