I heard James Hetfield recorded that a step down at a slower tempo then the producer sped it up to E and that is how it sounds so unrealistically clean for down picking at that tempo on the finished product! WOW

I grew up having learned it the right way but will admit I find myself lazy and just phone it in sometimes with the alt picking, I also play a lot of songs intentionally the wrong way like Hell's Bells intro acdc played on the wrong strings along with some other songs of Metallica wrong strings like high on the a and d instead of low on the d and g just because it somehow sounds better the way I play to me sometimes, or it's just easier sometimes with permanent nerve damage in that hand so sometimes the wrong way to play a thing causes less strain for me personally, so unless I'm going for spot on replication I play it how I can play it best, accurate when possible or alternatively when not, but these things are probably why I was excommunicated from the guitar world lmao

I always alternate pick it, it’s easiest on my wrist that way. I don’t do copious amounts of drugs and alcohol before my sets (like James and Kirk), so I gotta simplify the songs if my set list goes on for an hour😂 replacing down picking with alternate picking makes it so much easiesr😤
