Mourn With Those That Mourn | Hope Works

Have you ever been in a situation where you wanted to support someone but you didn’t know how? Have you tried to “solve” or “fix” the situation? Life’s challenges are ongoing and may not have a simple fix. What is often needed is someone to mourn with. Sheldon provides excellent tips for mourning with people.

The difference between mourning with someone and mourning for someone is that with implies a journey. You walk a path alongside them. There are times to sit with someone, listen to them, and validate what they are feeling rather than give advice or resources. It’s more helpful to mourn with than for someone.

Timing matters. If someone shares a vulnerability, it can be healing to have you actively listen. Genuinely try to connect with them. In fact, thank them for telling you, and acknowledge that you do not know what to say.

Tone matters. Genuinely try to connect with how they are feeling. Human relationships should not be mechanical. When someone opens up, they might already know of a solution but fear carrying it out.

Complex problems, challenges, and trials require time. So give people time. You’re the resource. You can help them come to the ultimate Healer, Jesus Christ. Whatever your sphere of influence, you can mourn with, walk with, cry with, wait with, listen with, and not simply mourn for those around you.

Has someone mourned with you?

I never knew HOW to do this. My parents didn't understand this life skill/Covenant. This testimony has been invaluable to me.

Brother Martin was and is always a beacon for me in my life. He was my favorite Seminary teacher and is an individual who has always remained the same throughout the years. I am now at the age he was when he was my teacher at Timpview High School and having gone through a little bit of life I can honestly say I hope to be the type of man Brother Martin perpetuated. A man of honor, integrity, humility and faith. Thank you for all you have and still do for me Brother Martin.

With love and respect,

"You are the resource" wow this is so profound and easily overlooked. Often those in difficult times do know many resources to address their issues including someone to vent to and just listen. They arent always wanting more advice. Just having someone to feel their heart. Thank you so much. This was very insightful.

Beautiful presentation. It has certainly given me much to think about, as well as suggestions on how I can be more Christlike when it comes to engaging with others experiencing difficult challenges. I believe that in order for anyone to counsel with the right tone and timing, we have to ask God to help us be in the right frame of mind, and the right spirit in order to genuinely mourn with those that mourn. This brother has provided wonderful insight, and has pointed things out that I want to be mindful of moving forward. I love Hope Works, it truly is a place of hope and light ❤️.

This is beautiful and made me think of my Patriachal Blessing's counsel to "Give help where help is needed" . Sometimes when I just dont know what to do or say The Holy Spirit steps in and comfort is felt even in silence.
Thank you Bro Martin for this.

I ran across this church video and found it very interesting. Until I became a widower with kids, I admit I was very bad at "morning with those who morn". The story of being with his ward member and friend, who ask him how to tell his kids that his wife and died, sounded very familiar. Telling my kids was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. This is a very good way to understand what people need when they are morning.

"There isn't going to be a right way to approach this."
Talk about the power of talk therapy!

I would love to gather some stories of when someone has "mourned with" you. What did they do, what was helpful, what wasn't?

This is the reason why I even stopped going to church and decided to work on myself, improving my quality of life instead than trying sooo hard to "go to heaven", stay poor, help others instead, my mom did that, she was so active in the church, gave most of her money to the church and spent even more money feeding missionaries, two couples twice a month, at home. What was her reward?? She died of a horrible paralizing dear bishop, with all due respect, spare me the counselling and the incessant invitations to go back to church and to start accepting callings and church related, time consuming chores and errands. This is not my calling in life, my bishop and church peers will never see it that way so..., it's better to stay away, there will be time for church later. I'd rather spend my days accumulating riches and as much wealth as I can, help the church by paying tithings and, when I am of old age and can barely walk go back to church happy and satisfied I did well and still did not stray from the right path back to heavenly father's presence and eternal life.

its so true, people are the only thing that can help people. Thanking god for the help people give and blaming man for the bad things that happen is so typical of any religion. there is no god, only a voice in your head that religion tells you is god. the only god that exists, is the god you create in your head.
