I actually work as a security guard and we are even told not to engage directly if we see things like this. The main purpose of the job is to be a visual deterrent and report suspicious behavior, not confront it.

Edit: Of course there are security forces you can hire that are armed and will engage if necessary, but those tend to be much more expensive because at that point you are essentially asking the guard to be ready to put their life on the line.

To be fair, I don’t think the manager was expecting that. He was doing his job of preventing that shoplifter from coming again and letting him know that.

When I worked at Burger King, we were told *never* to confront anyone. Someone wants to rob the store? Open the register step back and then call the police. Nothing in that store is worth losing your life over.

Stores even encourage you to NOT confront them, you don’t get paid enough for it, and the store doesn’t want to get involved in something serious like this💀

Sometimes it ain’t about the money, sometimes it’s the small things like this where you should step out and change things. Even if you get hurt, that’s what it means to be a hero. Even with the risks. The manager tried to be a hero, and got hurt. He knew what was coming but he did it anyway. Even still it’s just a pack of gummies at the end of the day but this shows what it means to “try to be a hero”

I completely agree with you. I work for a retail store, and this is something they warn us about regularly not to chase them out because people do do stupid things for small prizes.

The problem is not the gummy bears. Of course, no one should die over candy, but I appreciate what the store manager did and the bravery they show. One person steals one pack of gummy bears, no big loss. If enough people decide it's okay to steal from each other, all of us will no longer have a functioning society.

I was a third shift manager at an IHOP. I was working paycheck to paycheck at a really low point in life. Had a lady come in and hold me at gunpoint. I told her, please just leave, and you don’t have to worry about me calling the authorities. I don’t get paid a lot but I still need this money. She left and I continued to work

He’s exactly right about everything he said! Big retail chains such as Walmart and target have undercover employees who pose as regular customers and they scope out ppl who are acting suspicious to see if they’re stealing. If they see someone put something in their purse or pockets then try to walk out the door, they’ll immediately detain them and call the cops.

I remember when I worked in retail they wanted you to follow a shoplifter outside and take a pic of their plate . Screw that . These companies dont care about you . It’s not worth risking your life for them .
