This is exactly the issue with any self defense system/martial art etc. "I'll remember that" no you won't and you definitely won't in the real scenario unless you are practicing it very regularly.

My father was special forces he had me in boxing and mma from a young age plus firearms training. I have taken a knife away in a real life or death fight, training kicked in but I also have knife wounds on my arms now and some nerve damage in my left hand. All my training has taught me you don't really have a chance against a pistol even when close because how easily it can be shot even in awkward positions your just not going to seperate the shooter from the gun in time. When it comes to knives run if you can but know if you decide to fight your getting cut deep even if you win. Only way I'm going for the gun is if it's an active shooter and I need to give my family time to get away but at the end of the day I'll probably just be giving my life for theirs. Best thing to remember is a bullet can kill anyone navy seals and marines die in gun fights every year. Even the president of the United States was shot while surrounded by guards. The real goal is going home.

In every gun store I've ever been to, there are a couple regulars and we all cycle through. We don't just buy stuff and leave, we hang out and talk shit and be, you know, friendly. Sometimes a weirdo or someone otherwise sketchy comes in. Nobody ever says anything, we all just casually look at each other and casually shift into positions where should something get bad, everyone has a clear line on the potential problem without endangering other friendlies - all while still appearing and being friendly and helpful to the stranger. This is how communities should be.
