Alcohol and cigarettes were not banned during communism, but only licensed Bulgarian brands were sold, which no longer exist, with the exception of the "Sunny Beach" brandy. On the other hand, people made homemade brandy and wine for personal consumption. Greetings from Varna, Bulgaria!

The Cyrillic alphabet became the basis of writing for 108 languages.
States using the Cyrillic alphabet:
8 Slavic countries: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
5 non-Slavic countries: Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Mongolia.
4 countries that switched from Cyrillic to Latin script after the collapse of the CIS: Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan.

0:57 - On your left you can partly see the inscription: "Ministry of Environment and Waters".

1:25 - The Synagogue is right behind this building. This building is a historical (old) shopping center. Working as such from old times (late 19 century) all the way to today as a municipal property. Recently rented by international supermarket chain.

5:00 - Slaveikov Square (named on one of our most famous writes). The statues on the bench are father and son Slaveikov (both famous public figures). For decades this square was a cult place where books were sold on stalls. In recent years, the municipal council voted to discontinue this activity.

5:59 - "Мома" (Moma) means Maiden (unmarried young woman). You can see inside all the paintings of maidens. It's a rather pricey restaurant but the food and the cooking is of pretty good quality. It's mainly traditional cuisine with traditional (i.e. old fashioned) accessories and atmosphere.

12:40 - Incorrect info. During the Communist Era everything was state property. So the state was producing everything. Including alcohol. So alcohol was definitely not illegal, since the state was producing and selling alcohol. Maybe you heard about being illegal to sell your own alcohol production (or any production, since private business was forbidden), people brew alcohol at their homes - mostly in the province and villages, not in the big cities.

15:50 - Correct. Cyrillic alphabet was invented by us. However this historical fact is not well accepted in the other countries using the Cyrillic alphabet, they are not particularly happy with this fact and you can expect them to start arguing about it and try to downplay it.

Good little video. You didn't saw even 1% of Sofia, but it's better than nothing. Cheers.

Alcohol and cigarets were never illegal in Bulgaria. It is even funny to think that. Bulgaria was one of the largest producers of cigarets. It was illegal to make and sell unlicensed alcohol from your garage like it is now. But making your own and buying from shops was always legal and actually cheep. By the 90s most of the families will produce their own wine and rakia from grapes or fruits. When I was a child in the 80s the very normal thing was to drink after school from the slightly fermented grape juice “ blagushka or shira” before it turned to wine :). It is so so weird to hear that alcohol was forbidden 😂as you can be 10 and buy your father cigarets and alcohol

I had heard bad things about Sofia too (from a Bulgarian friend) but I actually really liked it there. The architecture is beautiful, there are some quirky streets with the trams, and the mountain right there was cool. Much better than Bucharest imo.

I love how you walk around and explore. The tree lined streets were cool and natural sprints are cool..Thanks for taking us along with you. I enjoy seeing things through your eyes especially as a solo female traveler

Thank you for visiting! It’s always fascinating to see yourself, your town, your culture, your history through someone else’s eyes, who is curious (and brave ;) to learn about them in person and generous to share them with others.

Sofia was founded 8100 years ago and is not only the oldest city in Europe but one of the oldest cities in the world. Rome, which was founded in 753 BC is like a newborn baby compared to Sophia, which was founded 6100 BC or 5347 years before Rome. Two of the oldest churches in the world, built in the early 4th century, are located in the center of Sofia, the rotunda of Saint George and Saint Sophia, after which the Bulgarian capital is named.

I appreciate how you don't try to hype up or talk down a place. You just show it, even if its boring. Thanks for these, man

В целом очень интересный тур по Восточной Европе. Надеюсь дальше на балканы пойдешь! Довольно колоритные места. Центральная Европа всем наскучила...

I'm a foreigner in Bulgaria and I love it. This is a lovely walkabout film, thank you. In Sofia, the Synagogue is 50 metres away from the Mosque.
