Rat hole is the tablet compression defect where powder or granules bind with the walls of hopper & flow from side walls is restricted.Powder or granules from the middle of hopper can easily flow and it results in formation of a hole which resembles with hole of a rat that is why it is known as rat hole tablet compression defect or Ratholing Defect.
Rat hole defect occurs in hoppers of Compression machine & most common reasons of rat hole are given as below
High moisture content
More fine & less granules in the final product
Less concentration of lubricants and glidants
Improper height adjustment of hopper base
Lack of force feeding system
