Veil's Summary Notes:

- JSPARK connects being tired with being in a 'SLUMP'. The following steps are for HOW to get out of a slump, in relation to your studies.

1. Understand WHY you are in a slump.

There are usually 3 reasons for this;

A) Learned helplessness.

- This is when you do poorly at something in the past, so your brain tells you that you'll also do poorly in the future, and so you never end up trying to improve.
- For example, when you fail a physics test once, and now you feel demotivated to study since your brain tricks you that the results will still be the same.
- This is related to stimuli and response, where you attach negative emotions to the task at hand.
- You can overcome this by creating some frameworks for disarming negative emotions related to the task at hand. A simple way to do this is a mantra like the one from master Oogway;

"Yesterday is history, so there's no point in bringing it up. Tomorrow is a mystery, something for future me to take care of. But today is a gift, and it is where I am needed most."

- Use something similar to the above to combat the tricks your brain tells you.

B) External circumstances.

- Examples of these include changes in your surroundings, stress, household problems, family problems, toxic friends, etc.
- To deal with these, seek help or talk to someone. Self help is best though. Read books and watch videos about the circumstance at your own pace, inorder to form an understanding of how to deal with it properly. This may take a while, though. But you'll Definintely find a solution one day if you Keep Learning!

C) Laziness.

- This is the most common one. Procrastination at its best, basically.
- Laziness is due to negative emotions (like the first one above) as well as dopamine promises.

- Negative emotions are usually either due to the task itself, or something which happened in your life which caused you to feel bad, and hence your motivation to work dropped.

- Dopamine promises refer to the basic urges you have which you decide to postpone acting on until later, which then hinder your study schedule. For example, thinking of playing a video game all day, and when it comes time to study, you just can't get rid of that 'itch', so you either procrastinate and do nothing, or play that video game whilst contemplating about how lazy you are.

Therefore, journal about why you are there to begin with and find the reason which brought you here initially. The above pointers are just potential scenarios to help jog your memory.

2. How To Break Out Of A SLUMP.

- When you are in a slump, your mood and productivity are going down simultaneously. Your job is to get them back up ASAP.
- This takes willpower and energy.

- Willpower is found in forcing your brain to be more positive, whilst processing negative emotions correctly. After all, negative emotions brought you to this point. And if you've been on the Internet long enough, then you've probably heard of the saying, "People behave based on emotions, and then justify their actions with logic."
- Using this logic, just become more positive to increase your willpower.

Another factor adding to your stress could be the overwhelming amount of work you need to do. That is likely the thing causing you negative emotions, since your brain perceives an excessive amount of effort you'll need to put in to the task at hand.

- Deal with this information overload by simplifying the task at hand. Break big task into smaller manageable tasks. And if you STILL feel overwhelmed, then break them down further!
- Do this breaking down process untill all you might need to do is write one sentence as step one. And step two might be to sit down and think about that sentence you wrote on step one. Overall, break it down until the steps are so easy to do, that maybe even lifting up your pen to write can count as a step in and of itself.

- Note to NOT Look at the broader MOUNTAINS of work you need to do. Just focus on the tiny steps you've accomplished so far, and allow yourself to feel happy as you accomplish each one. This ties back to the point above about being positive.

- You might already know this, but employ a growth mindset. Simply put, don't tell yourself that you'll fail. Be optimistic about the potential that you'll actually succeed.
- In fact, imagine scoring a perfect score on the exam/test and leaving your teachers with their mouth agape.

3. Write Down A ROADMAP.

This means to write down where you are right now, and where you want to be (your ideal quality of life).
- For example, currently you are lazy, you scroll on social media all day, your grades right now are terrible, and you don't study much. Your ideal life could be where you are easily productive, doesn't struggle with 2 hrs of focused study sessions, get's all A's, etc. BASICALLY, you want to be "That Student".

- Note to NOT be vague. Remember to be Hyper-specific with your ideal lifestyle, in relation to your studies.

- Also, don't set unrealistic goals. Start small and build up from there. And you start small by breaking down the steps of things you must do, as stated previously.

- One mistake to avoid, is to STOP comparing yourself to where you used to be. This might sound counterintuitive to growth, but consider this first...

- Standardize before you optimize. Meaning don't worry about being perfect and doing everything all at once. Just focus on the little steps one at a time for now. It doesn't matter if you used to study 2 hrs or 5 hrs in past. For now, just start with the basics.

- Just go in with the goal to study 2 minutes. If you feel like doing more, then go for it after you've already passed the two minute mark. If not, then stop the session and wait for the next one.

- The goals here is to re-establish the habit of studying. Worrying about how to study effectively comes later.

- Remember; yesterday you were doing nothing, and today you are doing something. That's all that matters. Don't worry how small your actions are, atleast you did it. And you should be proud as well for even taking that very first step.

- Take it one step at a time. Anger and frustration for being too slow won't help you here. Stay positive and pull yourself back up!

That's how you activate your willpower, and in essence, your productivity.

i have my exam in 8 hours and i have come arouse ur video . i am exactly as you mentioned as in the video learned helplessness and lazy and have a very big ego . these were the reasons i havent changed, it often feels better to fail or give up because i have grown comfortable in the feeling of misery so badly that i would rather have pain of regret rather than pain of discipline . i am really having a hard time changing my self . but i will work on my self and defiantly change because if i dont do it for my self the who will . its me against me . please keep making these type of videos . thank you for the video . if possible give more tips to improve myself .

Hey jspark,
I just wanted to say I love your videos and the content you're putting out there. I'm also a GCSE student and I study psychology. I love to research these topics and I'd love to share some of my research with you to help improve your videos. It would be nice to hear you mention real-life studies that took place to help support your tips and techniques. I would love to do that kind of research for you, if you need, I can always send/email you one of my research paper copies, I've done in my free time to show you my work.
Thank you✨
