The Opae’ula have been studied for their ability to survive for many years in an enclosed ecosystem. In the studio I have them in an open tank. I occasionally top off the tank with RO water and add a tiny pinch of fish food every few weeks. Their population has doubled over the last year!

That's not correct. NASA use these shrimp in a closed environment where just energy can be exchanged. These animals can survive because algae in this environment do photosynthesis and products O2 and organic matter, which is the food of the shrimp. Then dead shrimp are eaten by microorganisms and produce fertilizer for algae. It is a biological closed system called "NASA ecosphere". 😊
