Scientists Michael Hesse and John Dorelli explain the science objectives of the MMS mission.

The Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission is comprised of four identically instrumented spacecraft that will use Earth’s magnetosphere as a laboratory to study the microphysics of three fundamental plasma processes: magnetic reconnection, energetic particle acceleration, and turbulence. These processes occur in all astrophysical plasma systems but can be studied in situ only in our solar system and most efficiently only in Earth’s magnetosphere, where they control the dynamics of the geospace environment and play an important role in the processes known as “space weather.”

Every time I see animations of these spacecrafts I always wonder how those big long 60m wire booms work. How do they stay straight? Does the craft have to spin and just let them wind out? Is 3 rpm enough to fling them out? Will the wire generate electricity as it travels through the space weather? Is the spin aligned to the orbit? If the spacecraft was to spin faster or suddenly stop spinning would they spool up around the spacecraft?

These mysteries and others would need to be entirely solved in order to formulate accurate orbital paths. Variables to compensate for are thousands, and unknown ones are unknown, and some obstacles, course correction is not an option.
Basically, I don't understand how something that requires absolute precision to calculate, can be a complete mystery, if apparently these obstacles were hurdled 50 years ago.
Enlighten me.
