AMD Ryzen with VMware ESXi 6.5 - Ultimate Homelab? We Tried It

Luckily, we have guides to getting the systems working on Debian/ Ubuntu and CentOS on the main site, so you can still use Ryzen with Docker, and open source KVM virtualization.

I searched over the web to see if the status quo had changed since I was going to setup a lab using AMD desktop CPU, but couldn't find anything definitive. I bit the bullet and setup up a lab using ESXi 6.7.0 on AMD Ryzen 5 3600 successfully. Spun up some Windows and Linux VMs on it and no issues. So if anyone was wondering, Ryzen 3000 works on ESXi at least for the above build albeit not officially supported

VMware need to up their game. Let's not ever forget, the 64 bit architecture was formed by AMD. Remember ESXi emulates memory controllers so this is not surprising.

Guys, is it working now with vmware 6 or 6.5? I am planning to build a new PC for VMware Workstation and I am not sure what to choose between 1700x and I7 7700k. Thanks

the RyZEN misses the required AMD-RVI CPU Extensions for virtualization, this is a requirement for ESXi. is this the cause for failure or some other hardware in your setup caused the problem?

I run VMware workstation pro. and run with it vsphere 6.0
my hard ware is ryzen 7 1800x. MOB asrock x370 taichi. the vsphere was running slow before I update the bios to 2.0 now vsphere is run normaly.

AMD Ryzen is not working with vmware 6.5. Will it work with esxi 6 or 5.5? Will have to wait for vmware's patch i guess.

Hi everyone! Does anyone know if the ryzen 3900x and 3950x support nested esxi and nested hyper-v in vmware workstation pro? I plan to buy a new cpu for virtualization testing purposes and these chips offer better value than going with intel. I will also build some XPenology VMs under vmware workstation. VMware is good with hardware support, just not consumer desktop hardware. It has no issue with datacentre grade gear.

SInce ESXI would not detect the onboard LAN on my Asus Z270, I'd have been frankly shocked if it had worked with a 3 days old chipset.... :)
