TL;DR: it seems Faker has been granted a delay on his enlistment, similar to the one BTS got as his contract overlaps his compulsory enlistment timeframe,
but Deft is unconfirmed as he'll be 27 when his contract at Damwon expires, according to the Riot Global Contract Database. As he has now won Worlds, perhaps he'll be
granted the same delay as Faker.

Faker's father has also said that Faker wishes to continue competing into his 30's if his form can remain consistent.

Fun fact: The original photo I used for the thumbnail is actually of Famous K-Pop artist Rain that recently finished his military service.

Ok, I've seen a bunch of your vids now and I gotta say that you make them really well! Short and to the point, and well made also and with a good narrative voice and all. Just like it should be done! You got a sub and I hope you get many many more. Good content like this, above much of the other out there, deserves recognition.

Faker and Deft has the possibility of getting exempted if they got selected and get gold for the upcoming asian games. Both were in contention this year but the games were delayed. IIRC, Deft mentioned in a interview that his military enlistment was postponed to continue getting treatment for his back injury. Ultimately from his recent interview, Deft said he does want to play even after military but will see it then if his skills will still there despite that.

South Korean here no way Deft gets an exemption or even a extension because of public opinion. BTS is a special case and even then the opinion of most people was very negative. The government isn't going to try and push the matter any more. Now one way they could both earn an exemption is by getting a gold medal at the Asian Games. Athletes are given exemption (actually alternative service) by getting a medal of any kind at the olympics or a gold medal at the asian games. Since e-Sports have been accepted as a full event at the next Asian Games, if Korea wins gold they'll get exemptions by law.

Even if they don't win gold, both Faker and Deft (presumably) are eligible for alternative service, so we won't be seeing them in the military other than a month-long boot camp

Faker's squad leader while he on the battlefield: "Look at the cleanse. Look at the moves. Faker what was that!?"

The oldest member from BTS who is 30 years old, is now currently set to serve in the military during this month. So yeah Faker seems like he got the extension up to 30 years old from the special law for BTS and Faker meanwhile for Deft, it's still a question till next year if he is granted as well.

Feeling para-social over here but Faker is a legend and it almost brings a tear to my eye knowing he's getting the recognition he deserves. I don't have an opinion on whether he should or shouldn't serve in his military but I am of the mindset that he's jumped leaps and bounds and has done huge things for the reputation of South Korea. He's humble, he's got flaws, he's got pure talent but most importantly, he's got the drive and termination to achieve things most people can't. Don't forget the amount of pressure on his shoulders. He has the world's eyes on him in terms of the "gaming" community as well as enormous pressure from the gauze of his country. He's not just a top athlete, he's a super star and an incredible role model.

Faker and Deft will likely receive exemptions for their status as Korean e-sports ambassadors in League. However, I wouldn't expect them to be able to delay it for very long. As much as Faker is the GOAT of LoL, in the grand scheme of things that matters very little. BTS were not able to not do their mandatory military service even with their massive worldwide fame and fanbase, so I don't see esport pros being exempted.

Fun fact: A lot of the attention surrounding celebrity military service is due to an event that involved Yoo Seung-jun (a Korean-American celebrity who was extremely famous in Korea and parts of Asia in the early 2000s) where he repeatedly stated that he would do his national duty and serve in the military (even going as far as to hold a farewell concert on the eve of his enlistment). He boarded a flight to the US the next day and naturalized to avoid conscription. This triggered a lifetime entry ban in Korea for Yoo, and the tightening of laws and regulations surrounding military conscription in Korea. The topic of military service in Korea remains a volatile political third rail even today.
