Short, sweet and straight to the point. Thank you

An old boy here in Louisiana taught me this. He has been doing this for years. I tried it and expected him to make fun of me because I was gullible. Nope! He was absolutely right.

Just take some hot water, not boiling but hot, throw it in your bucket and put in all your rock salt. Stir it up put a lid on it to help. Keep it warm and let it sit for a couple hours. Pretty much all dissolve.. and when your waters cool down, pour it into your container and spray it.

Lye powder will kill trees, shrubs, grass everything. But be careful only get it where you want it and not too close to the edges because I sprayed the stump and killed everything 20 feet around the stump!😅

If you have a tree, you want to die, chop some bunch of the bark off, put some good grooves in the tree drill a cup of holes, whatever, and start pouring that around in those areas and all around and up and down the tree and just around the roots. It’s a huge tree that’s big around four people. It’ll take about a year to work but then you’ll start seeing that tree dying off. When it’s hot, there’s no rain. Hasn’t been any rain not gonna be any rain for a few days or longer that tree will start to rot and die, that will work its way down in the soil collecting the soil and those roots will just continue to soak it up. Same goes for grass weeds anything but they will spread out so don’t get too close to the edges of the area that you want to kill off say a stone driveway for instance.

Lye, also comes from fireplace, ashes, and charcoal, grill ashes! I killed a huge tree only using charcoal grilling, spent charcoal ashes. Took about a year before that tree started rotting, and the branches started rotting, but it worked!

All your ashes are the same as lye pretty much.

Anyway

I'm going to start doing this. Too many foxtails around here and my soil contains mostly rock and is not good for gardening unless doing above ground beds

That salt (for water softeners) is also a great de-icing salt too. The pieces are too large to track inside and stain the flooring, but still small enough to melt ice and be effective. Plus in a lot of places they are cost competitive over actual de-icing salt. Add to that the fact that you can buy broken bags for super-cheap..and that stuff should be on the list every time you go into agway, or a big box store.

TBH, if you are looking for a full kill and don't want anything growing in the area, nothing beats salt water and high acid vinegar. Not Roundup or anyone. Just make sure you don't want anything growing and trim the weeds before applying because you will sterilize the dirt. If you want to save your grass and target weeds, then you have to use chemicals. If this is the case, use Triclopyr instead of Glyphosate.

Any advice on how to do this over 2 acres
Does this only work on grass or on most Plants weeds and vegetation?

We have a large patio area and got tired of mowing. We tried weed killer, didn't work. My dad thought gasoline was a good idea, didn't work. I was the one that suggested salt.

I called this the nuclear option, or the scorched earth option. Needless to say, we no longer have weeds growing. Or any kind of grass...or just anything.

Maybe in a high concentrate, I put a spoonful of salt mixed with a gallon of water for fertilizer instead of miracle grow and my plants grow beautifully.

Does it work on noxious weeds too? Or just grass?

I'm not trying to knock what your saying, maybe in high concentration, I haven't tried that on weeds yet. But I will.

does the grass smell as it’s dying? I used baking soda one time to kill grass and weeds between my pavers and the stench was incredible. My neighbors were so mad.

Just FYI I've recently read that using salt as a weedkiller can be nearly as destructive as using manufactured weed killers containing glyphosphate. The salt will render everything dead in the area it is applied in for several years, or until water washes it away. However, when it's washed away it can end up in drinking water tables and apparently is causing big problems in high snow areas where it is used to clear the roads. I think a balanced view is needed here, as if people are collectively doing this to better their own lives and properties, but at the cost of the environment and our drinking water, then perhaps it's not a good idea.

The active ingredient in roundup and most nontoxic herbicides is isopropylamine salt
