In southern Ukraine, 1,730 Ukrainian soldiers surrendered this week at the Azovstal steel plant in the port city of Mariupol, Russia said. Ukraine is hoping to exchange the Azovstal soldiers for Russian prisoners. But pro-Kremlin authorities in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region said some of them could be put on trial.

Wow, France24 I gotta give you credit where it’s due, since I schit on you so often.
You actually wrote the word “surrender” in your headline..
It’s the first time I’ve seen the word used by a media outlet.

After interrogation and trial, their fate will be known. In the Donbass, there is no moratorium on the d-e-a-t-h penalty, by the way.

Russia has an excellent track record of either murdering its own returned POWs or sending them off to Gulags, where they probably die anyway, but just more slowly. Also, Putin's Russia is as bad, if not worse than Stalin's Russia, which murdered 22, 000 Polish officers. So I don't hold out that much hope for Russia honouring the articles of war, in regard to those who surrendered, let alone exchanging them. And let's not forget that, unlike the reluctant soldiers they would be getting back, these Ukrainian soldiers are incredibly brave and tenacious, and would be anxious to return to active duty ASAP.
