Michigan by The Milk Carton Kids from their album Prologue

lyrics:
the clouds move over Pontiac skies
their silent thunder matches mine
I know this feeling from long ago
I wondered was it gone, now I know

when she calls don't send her my way
when it hurts you'll know it's the right thing

Michigan's in the rear view now
keep your hands where I can see them
you took the words right out of my mouth
when you knew that I would need them
what am I supposed to do now without you?
without you

it's unannounced like you'd expect it
among broke down brake lines and Motown records
all that's left is a blind reflection
you know what's coming and you regret it

when she calls don't send her my way
when it hurts most it's the right thing

Michigan's in the rear view now
keep your hands where I can see them
you took the words right out my mouth
when you knew that I would need them
what am I supposed to do now without you?
without you

I don't own the right of this song.

My husband moved to Indiana from Detroit to marry me. Shortly thereafter I delivered our miracle son (his first child). He had been told his whole life that he couldn’t have kids. My son was delivered two months early by emergency c-section due to my severe preeclampsia. We visited him in the hospital every day until we brought him to our new home. Long story short, my husband became very ill and was in and out of hospitals for the next year and a half up until his death 3 months ago. He loved his home state and missed it very much, but he came here for love and to raise his son in the short amount of time he was given. He was an amazing father, my best friend, and soul mate...gone too soon. I traveled up to Detroit a few weeks ago to retrieve some of the things he left in a storage unit and thought of this song on my return home. “Michigan’s in the rear view now...what am I supposed to do now—without you?” Good question. I’ll try my best to keep his memory alive for our son, and think upon the good times we shared, for the all-too-short time that we were bound together on this earth. I believe I will see him again one day in the place where every tear shall be wiped away. Where faith, hope and love remain...and the greatest of these is Love. RIP, Michael. Fulton and I love you more than you could ever imagine. ♥️

I live in Ohio but my brother died in a hospital in Michigan last year. This song captures how I felt on the drive back home after losing him so much.

Listening in 2023.
My buddy introduced me to this song, we used to jam, literally, we both played the guitar. Sadly, he passed away in September . This song encapsulates every feeling, every time. RIP brother.

I broke up with my girlfriend 2 years ago and moved from Michigan to New Jersey. This song came on Pandora as soon as I crossed the state line into Ohio. I have never felt emotions like that, I probably played it 15 times in a row. A song that literally 'took the words right out my mouth.'

this hits different when you're heartbroken and know you need to move on even though it hurts.

If anything can get me to feel the aching weight of loneliness, it's this song.

This is going to be a long winter.

I was born in Pontiac, Michigan. I moved from a very abusive home in MI to IL in 2008 and this song encompasses how I felt driving on the interstate. Just.. wow.

Everyone told me not to go to Detroit. But I went anyways. What an amazing city. It's not as bad as people say it is. I had an amazing experience there and driving through southern Michigan and interacting with the locals. Trip of a lifetime. Hope to go back soon.
