The part you left out is how they bail it up and ship it to other states for disposal in landfills.

I had never driven to NYC (this was in ‘95 and I was driving from MD). No computer, cell phone, co-pilot or GPS, just a paper map. Since my Dad was raised on Long Island, I called him for directions to my cousin’s house. As I was writing down pertinent information, asked how was I going to know when I reached Staten Island. His reply was “roll down your window and you’ll know.” 😂

What most people don't know that is part of the process was the "Global Transfer Station". All of this garbage is actually dumped in 3rd world countries via huge shipping cargos.

As a Japanese New Yorker I was so so worried about this issue. Thank you so so much for letting me know that trash management is actually working for real. Bravo Dept of SANITATION and all hard workers @NYC!

A lot gets baled and sent on flatbed trailers to out of state landfills. I've hauled several for a load out of the city.

Thankful for the men and women doing that job

New York needs to build at least 50 regional Waste To Energy companies around the state, to use 100% of the state's garbage to generate electricity!

Also remember, while living in Key West in the 80s, the 1987 garbage barge fiasco when NYC had reached its landfill capacity and was sending it to Morehead City, NC but they said “nope.” It floundered around the east coast for months, even spending time off the FL Keys. Oy. 😂

I used to deliver fly ash to Covanta in Long Beach. They simply burn everything at high temp until nothings left.

I hauled trash in portsmouth VA. On the tipping floor the trash was dumped and then sorted. The stuff that could be burned went across the street to a plant to also be burned for fuel.
