No it's not a free market economy and it hasn't been one since the creation of the federal reserve. At this point I'm not sure what you could call America as far as economic framework is concerned and have it be accurate other then corrupted.

I would say that we are not a free market economy and I don’t think we ever had been.

there has never been an economic system that brought people out of poverty, except Capitolism. in the ancient world virtually every one lived in abject poverty, until the Industrial Revolution.

Like in every other country, the state does stuff also in the US. The US is a big economy, so the government programms are larger also. When you factor this relative state power in, compare tax codes and government programms the US is on the free market side of the spectrum of industrialised countries.
I live in Germany, where we have socialized health care, a high tax rate and a comparatively low amount of new businesses per year. The US is definetely more free market in comparison to that in those aspects.
Defining those terms is all about comparing different countries and historical periods to each other.
