Humans have spent our entire time on earth trying to learn and develop new ways of living. We often forget that humans thousands of years ago tried just as hard as us to solve the problems of their day.

As a Brazilian soil scientist, I’ll mention that the formation process of “black earth” is well known among soil scientists. The “terra preta” is formed in areas where residues (leftover foods, bones, plants ect) were discarded over a long period of time (talking about 100yrs +) by the native. Over time, a dense A horizon rich in organic matter is formed.

One of the things that makes me sad is the fact there's so much more human history we've lost than history we have access to.

When modern people forget that travelling and sharing knowledge back then was a thing.

Read an article on this once a long time ago. It said there was evidence of slashing, burning and replanting. They had transformed 2/3rds of the Amazon. I remember the accompanying pictures. There was one of an excavation, there was a charcoal layer in the cross section of dirt. In the areal photos there was a very distinct visible difference between the vegetation of the two parts, almost like a line had been drawn where one ended and the other began.

Brazilian here, actually the soil is only fertile because of the trees. If you remove them to cultivate It becomes infertile

My family is from guatemala and if you ever visit Tikal, which is the sight of some of the largest Mayan ruins like El Gran Jaguar (the great Jaguar temple) they’re still discovering pyramids their. I got to climb to the top of the most recent one they had discovered at the time and they were still unearthing it. From the top you can see as far as the eye can see, just miles and miles of jungle. And they say many of the hills that are around may still be pyramids. But if you’ve ever lived in a jungle, you’re realize how quickly the earth can swallow everything up if left unkept.

The terra preta is simply organic matter, which makes the forest feed itself nowadays
