This is meant as completely constructive. Don’t take it the wrong way. I would recommend just getting heavier KBs to do the cleans with. It’s a lot more intuitive to get your hips involved that way. The power clean you’re executing right now more closely resembles a reverse curl. It’s super common because cleans are pretty technical. Try to find a group of Olympic WL and hang with them for a day or two to pick up some things to focus on. There should be a lot more hips and vertical elbows. Feel free to Google me. I held all of the US records in all the strongman clean and press events for several years when I competed.

Great, well detailed explanation of weight training, timing, and how to fit weight training in to your overall training schedule. Well done!

Great Video! Big fan of endurance athletes incorporating S & C regularly.

Only thing/caveat I’d add is for athletes brand new to lifting weights - I would avoid going directly into “heavy lifting.” Instead, start w/ lower weights, higher reps first to learn and reinforce proper form.

Please forgive me if you mentioned this.

Keep up the good work!

Taren, long time listener, first time commenter.

I’ve seen a lot of your videos, including all you have to say about strength training. But I don’t here you talk a lot about upper body strength ... not only for swimming, but even for proper sustained arm movement while running, Are traditional upper-body calisthenics like pull-ups ever in your workout routine?

@Triathlon Taren     I have been following your strength training plan (hex bar deadlifts & single leg split squats, with plyometrics) that you put together a few years ago, do you still believe that this is a good program to follow? Also how close to race season or your 1st 'A race' of the session would you switch to lower weight and higher reps?

T. Silly question but for 300w indoor goal, when you let Zwift detect power source are you overriding it from using your Tac Neo and using your power meter? If not that may be part of the diff between indoor and outdoor numbers. I find my power on tac is about 5-10% lower than on my power meter as reported through head unit. I think you lose power between meter (mine in my pedals) and the back gear where I think tac measures it. Just thought this might help, but you likely caught this. I update power source to meter so it’s consistent indoors vs outdoors.

One of the biggest mistakes ppl make is assuming "traditional weight training puts on mass" on its own .... it doesn't unless you're really trying to make that happen. I've been lifting heavy for some time now and my weight hasn't changed... but my muscle-fat ratio has... and i've gone down several pants sizes. "Putting on mass" is not a thing most people need to worry about unless that's their goal and they're really focused on making that happen

Just be careful with those cleans! I moved into tri from CrossFit and I have a recurring problem with the muscles around my scapula due to neglecting form with cleans and snatch in CrossFit. The movement should involve the traps and the bar needs to stay as close as possible to your body, no swinging. I hate being someone who points out “form” but believe me if you get the issue I have everything is a nightmare when those muscles injure in the back 😭

I also wore short and rubber boots to walk the dog this morning. Always a good decision when it starts getting warmer haha. Also good content totally agree with the methodology. Followed similar ebbs and flows for training for football back in the day.

That moment around 1:50 makes me somehow nervous:)

Your power cleans are closer to muscle cleans than power.

The biggest mistake people make is that they train on a Bosu ball, break their ankles without ever needing to put themselves on an unstable surface like that.

Could you do a post on the USAT email that came out to understand it. What I read is not what I understood from this. Just a little confused.
Just thought I would share this with you guys. It was shared with me. We should be getting an email. go vote

IMPORTANT for USAT Annual Members- PLEASE VOTE ON PROPOSED BYLAWS
If you are an annual USAT Member, you will receive a ballot shortly asking for your vote on certain bylaw changes. Some of these are as a result of requirements of Congress and the USOPC. Some are not. While many of the changes are beneficial, I encourage you to consider a few sections that will dramatically affect the nature of USAT and your participation as a member:
1. The composition of the board with your approval will reduce the number of directors who are elected by you from 6 to 4. There is no compelling rationale for this in my opinion. USAT has always been a membership organization and this change will alter that. Our members are our backbone and pay the bills in the form of their dues, race sanctioning fees, etc. It seems that they should have more than a 1/3 representation on the board.
2. The 4 directors elected by you, our members, will no longer be elected on a regional basis, but nationally based upon candidates placed on the ballot by the Nominating and Governance Committee. While directors do not “represent” the interest of their region as opposed to the interest of USAT as a whole, you would likely be far more familiar with candidates who come from your region. And while board members have a duty to act in the best interest of USAT as a whole, we bring a “regional” voice in terms of how members feel in different parts of our Country.
3. Perhaps one of the most important changes: You will no longer, as members, have a right to vote on any bylaws change. Over the past six years, your right to vote on changes has been limited to just a few sections of the bylaws that effect your membership. You will no longer have that right. So, as example, if a board in future years decides not to have any general directors at all (eliminating the four that would exist should these changes be approved), you would have no say in that.
As a director, I am told that I have a duty to support resolutions passed by the board whether I agree with them or not, however, I believe I have a responsibility to ensure that you are clear on what you are voting for, along with the possible down-side to voting in favor. All I ask is that you seriously consider the above prior to voting. If the proposal is defeated, you will be asked later in the year, to vote on those changes that are required by the USOPC and other sections that would be beneficial, yet preserve the nature of USAT and your membership. But however you feel, please vote!
