My name is Todd Mansfield and I’m a clinical herbalist dedicated to digestive health. Every week I treat Australian and New Zealand patients with IBS, IBD, SIBO, reflux, indigestion, bloating, loose bowel movements and constipation.

For everyone else, I’m passionate about supporting you so follow along with this free content to support your digestion without drugs!

Today, I want to introduce you to one of my favourite herbal allies. Clove bud is definitely in my top five or ten herbs in my herbal dispensary.

Clove is known for its aromatic and potent properties. It's incredibly spicy, warm, and pungent, making it a powerhouse when it comes to herbal medicine. One of its main actions is its strong antimicrobial effect. I personally use clove to target and eliminate unfriendly bugs in the digestive tract, from the stomach all the way down to the small and large bowels.

When it comes to using clove, I prefer the liquid form. But clove is incredibly potent. So it's important to start with a lower dose and gradually increase it based on your tolerance and symptom improvements. For example, I might begin with a 50 ml dose of a 1:2 clove tincture per month. Trust me, it's not a massive dose, but it can be highly effective.

Let's talk about the science behind clove. Its antimicrobial properties are primarily effective against gram-negative bacteria, which are often the culprits behind inflammatory and gut-related issues. Gram-negative bacteria can wreak havoc on your gut lining and dysregulated your immune system.

Clove is not only beneficial for bacterial imbalances but also for fungal infections. As part of an anti-fungal program, clove can work wonders. This is where the beauty of custom-formulated herbal medicine comes into play. It's tailored to your specific needs and can deliver fantastic results that you won't find in generic protocols.

Speaking of conditions like IBS, clove can be a valuable tool in improving symptoms and resolving the condition. Additionally, it's worth noting that clove has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It can inhibit histamine release from mast cells, making it a good option for patients with histamine or mast cell-related issues.

When it comes to using clove, I typically recommend doses ranging from 50 ml to 100 ml per month of a 1:2 tincture. Going higher than that doesn't usually provide much additional benefit, and it's important to consider taste and compliance as well.

Clove was definitely a LIFESAVER for me when I was reallly ill (last summer) with gut dysbiosis and over-growth issues. It is, indeed, a POWERHOUSE herb!! I still use it and love it -- for maintenance. Thank you for this helpful video. ❤🥰🙏🌿

Hi Todd, It’s really interesting to hear how clove works in so many ways and so quickly. It reminds me to keep taking my tinctures! Also loving your willingness to share your expertise on social media.

Hi, can you do a video about herxheimer reactions? I took oil of oregano oil capsules two times a day for 14 days and became severely sick, flu like symptoms, chills, muscle aches and nodules in my throat. We tested for everything and finally came down to it being a herxheimer reaction from oil of oregano. I literally felt like death. But I am doing better now and so far it seems that the oil of oregano worked for the bacterial infection I had.

Thank you so much for this information. I have been binging on all things gut related the past few months to try and help myself with some major issues and find your content my favorite and easiest to digest.

For someone with histamine issues are there any alternatives to Clove?
Would things like Thyme be good alternatives to achieve a similar effect?

Love your videos. So informative.
Thanks

Hi there, very much enjoy your blogs and videos here. I'm in the united states and after having to treat myself for herbally for years I am again trying to find a holistically aware practitioner that can also order appropriate testing etc. Any recommendations?

Very interesting, thank you!
Is it generally better to stick to just 1 herb (like clove) or combine several like clove, thyme, oregano, juniper, cinnamon? For example when treating chronic bacterial infections.

Thank you, Byron! And thank you to the very helpful information from others on this site. I am such a hard time finding clove in tincture form. I know you mentioned it's your ideal method of intake. If I get the clove capsules, break it open, and add distilled water (thank you, Julie Peterson!), can I start at 1 capsule or 2 capsules per day and work my way up to 3 capsules per day? And you mentioned 1-2 months. If I still have symptoms, do I take a break then start up again? Thank you! I wish I were in Australia. :)

My daughter is prone to abscesses and she's only 10 years old. Would you recommend this for children? Maybe a much smaller dose than usual or something else?
